BETTER LATE THAN NEVER
• Coastal Carolina and UNCW will finally meet for the first time this season on Wednesday night at Brooks Field.
• The two teams were scheduled to play back on April 6 at Springs Brooks Stadium, however, the Chanticleers had to pause baseball activities due to COVID-19 protocols.
• Wednesday night's game was actually originally scheduled for Tuesday night, April 13, however, CCU's weekend schedule changes last weekend at UTA forced the game to be moved back one day.
CHARTING THE CHANTS
• Coastal enters the midweek contest at 15-11 overall and 2-4 in Sun Belt Conference play.
• The Chants are 13-7 against non-conference opponents and 2-0 in midweek games this year.
• CCU is coming off its second Sun Belt series of the season, dropping two of three games to UTA in Arlington, Texas last weekend after a seven-day COVID-19 pause.
• After starting the month of March off at 8-3, Coastal has gone just 2-5 over their last seven games.
• The offense has three players hitting over .300 on the season in
Billy Underwood (.333),
Eric Brown (.314), and
BT Riopelle (.303), while leader
Parker Chavers is a tick under .300 at .298 on the season. A total of four players with over 25 hits on the season.
• On the mound, the pitching staff posts a 4.58 ERA, ranking fifth in the Sun Belt.
SCOUTING THE SEAHAWKS
• The UNCW Seahawks are 15-12 overall this season with a 4-5 record in the Colonial Athletic Conference.
• The Seahawks are coming off three-straight losses to the 13th-ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys in Stillwater last weekend.
• Against Sun Belt opponents, the Seahawks are 3-0, sweeping Appalachian State from March 12th-14th, outscoring the Mountaineers 17-3 in that series win.
• The Seahawks have been impressive at home this season, posting a 13-5 record at Brooks Field.
• Offensively, UNCW is hitting .279 this season with five players batting over .300.
• On the mound, the Seahawks hold a 4.27 team ERA and 241 strikeouts over 238.1 innings pitched, an average of 9.1 strikeouts per nine innings.
ALL-TIME SERIES
• In 97 meetings, Coastal Carolina leads the all-time series 63-34 over UNCW.
• Separated by just 72 miles, Wednesday night's game will be the 98th meeting between the two teams, making UNCW the third-most played opponent in CCU history.
• CCU and UNCW met for the first time in 1976, with the Seahawks winning the first matchup 5-2.
• The Chants grabbed three of the four games played against the Seahawks in 2019 and are 8-2 in their last 10 games versus UNCW.
• Coastal is 27-21 all-time in Wilmington but has dropped two of the last three meetings on the Seahawks' home field.
MIDWEEK MADNESS
• Coastal Carolina is 2-0 this season in true (non-Monday) midweek contests with a 4-1 extra-inning win at then-No. 16 Wake Forest (Feb. 23) and an 8-7 home win over the College of Charleston (March 23).
• However, the Chanticleers have had more midweek games postponed or canceled than they have actually played this season. Their game with NC State on March 16 was canceled, while their two midweek games scheduled for last week versus UNCW (April 6) and College of Charleston (April 7) were both postponed.
UNFORESEEN ROAD SWING
• Due to the Chanticleers' pause in activities with COVID-19 protocols, the team has played an unforeseen road swing that will be the longest of the season.
• Wednesday night's contest with UNCW will mark the eighth consecutive road game for the Chanticleers over the last three weeks, as CCU had five home games postponed during the pause in activities.
• The longest road trip on the original schedule was just four games with a stretch coming in March, two in April, and one in May.
• The eight-game road trip matches the longest since the 2019 season in which the Chanticleers played two games at Illinois (April 2-3), three at South Alabama (April 6-7), one at NC State (April 10), and two more at Little Rock (April 12).
HIT THE PAUSE BUTTON
• The Coastal Carolina baseball program had to pause all baseball activities, including workouts and games, for seven days beginning on March 30 in accordance with the Sun Belt COVID-19 guidelines.
• Coastal's five baseball contests which included a three-game home series against Appalachian State (April 1-3) and back-to-back midweek games at home versus UNCW (April 6) and College of Charleston (April 7) were all postponed for now.
• Rescheduled dates, if any, will be announced when information becomes available.
SHORTHANDED CHANTS
• Since March 24, head coach
Gary Gilmore has not had his full roster available for a game due to sickness.
• Not counting the injuries that the Chanticleers had coming into the season, Coastal had several players miss time in the four-game series at Louisiana (March 26-29) due to a stomach bug, while the last two-plus weeks have seen several players miss practice and games at UTA (April 10-12) due to COVID-19 protocols.
SUN BELT SLUMP
• For the first time since joining the Sun Belt for the 2017 season, the Chanticleers dropped their first two three-game conference weekend series with series losses at Louisiana (March 26-28) and at UTA (April 10-12).
• Entering this season, Coastal had won 21 of its 30 Sun Belt Conference series since joining the league, including winning nine of its 10 conference series in 2018.
• Overall, the Chants had lost just seven series in conference play since joining the Sun Belt entering the 2021 season and had lost back-to-back conference series just once (2019).
#14 CHASING 1000
• Head Coach
Gary Gilmore enters the UNCW midweek contest with 989 career wins as the head coach of his alma mater Coastal Carolina.
• That puts #14 just 11 wins away from 1,000 career wins over his 26 years at CCU.
