Track and Field in Action on Day 1 at Tom Jones Invitational

Chanticleer earn 11 top-20 finishes on day one

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Coastal Carolina track and field kicked off the two-day Tom Jones Invitational on Friday at the Percy Beard Track with 11 top-20 results.


WOMEN

 

The Coastal women had five sprinters compete in the 200-meter event.

 

Sophomore Melissa Jefferson followed behind six Power Five school runners with a seventh-place finish. Jefferson ran a personal best at 23.70 (0.4), third all-time in Chanticleer history.

 

Fellow 200-meter sprinter Kayla Sweeney earned a top-20 performance with a time of 24.13 (2.3), good for 18th overall.

 

Rounding out the 200 meters for CCU was Jermaisha Arnold at 24.30 (0.9), Amaryah White  at 25.05 (-0.3), and Keniah Wallace at 25.19 (1.2).

 

Freshman Shani'a Bellamy finished inside the top 10 of the 400-meter hurdles as she ran a personal best time in the event.

 

Bellamy finished ninth with a time of 1:02.54, followed by Lauren Gordon's  1:05.11, good for 15th place.

 

Long jumper Mycal Bowser placed in the top 20 and 10th of all collegiate competitors with a personal-best mark of 5.77 meters in the respective competition.

 

MEN

 

DeVonte Harris and Ty Floyd competed in the 200-meter dash on Friday, with the duo earning top-25 performances.

 

The freshman Harris finished in seventh place with a personal-best time of 21.57 (0.9), and the senior Floyd finished in 23rd with a time of 21.79 (0.8).

 

A trio of long jumpers represented the Chanticleers with top 20 results.

 

Senior David Ejumeta led the threesome with a 10th-place finish as he reached the mark of 7.22 meters.  Alex Spillum and Dallas Wise followed with respective distances of 6.86 and 6.72 meters.

 

In the javelin, sophomore Aaron Keeler earned a third-place finish with a mark of 52.22 meters.

 

Major Chestnut finished his day out as he picked up a top-20 finish in the discus with a throw of 43.26 meters,


The Chanticleers finish up the two-day Tom Jones Invitational on Saturday, with the day's events beginning at 10 a.m. ET.
