Chants Earn Doubleheader Split with Game Two Victory

Sweigart and Clegg hit first home runs of season in the 6-3, game-two win.

ATLANTA, Ga. - The Coastal Carolina softball team split Saturday's doubleheader with the Georgia State Panthers (14-22, 2-13 SBC) by the scores of 2-3 and 6-3 at the Robert E. Heck Softball Complex in Atlanta.

The Chanticleers go to 12-19 overall, and 3-11 in the Sun Belt Conference play in the Saturday split.

GSU 3, CCU 2 (9 inn.) (Game 1)

Game one was a pitcher's duel between Chants' starter Kaitlin Beasley-Polko and Panther's starter Sophie Mooney. The two pitchers combined to pitch 17.2 innings, allowed five runs and stranded 19 runners on base, but it was the Panthers who were able to pull out the victory in the nine-inning, 3-2, for their second conference win of the season.

Panther's Emily Brown led off the game with a single and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Olivia Davis. Brown moved over to third on a wild pitch by Beasley-Polko before coming around to score on Bailee Richardson's RBI infield single to make the score 1-0.

The Chanticleers took the lead in the top of the fifth inning with a pair of runs on three hits.

With one out and runners on second and third for CCU, senior Makiya Thomas put her team on the scoreboard with two RBI on a single back up the middle, past Mooney, putting the teal and bronze on top, 2-1.

Beasley-Polko fended off the Panther batters throughout the next two-plus innings before surrendering the lead in the bottom of the seventh.

Beasley-Polko allowed a pair of hits and a walk to start the home half of the seventh before the Chants' Taylor Sweigart threw out Gabby Benson at home plate for the first out. On the ensuing batter, the righty uncorked a wild pitch that that evened the score at 2-2.

Georgia State won the game in the bottom of the ninth to hand the Chants their first extra-inning loss of the season.

Sydney Stavro led off the ninth for GSU with a single and got herself into scoring position with a steal of second base. Davis put down her second sacrifice bunt of the game that advanced Stavro to third. Two batters later, after Beasley-Polko allowed two walks to fill the bases, the senior sent her a pitch past the catcher, allowing Stavro to score the game-winning run, 3-2.

Mooney picked up the victory for Georgia State as she pitched a complete-game nine innings. The righty allowed nine hits and two runs with nine strikeouts.

Beasley-Polko drops to 6-8 on the season as she pitched a career-high 8.2 innings, struck out 10 batters, and allowed three runs.

The Tacoma, Wash., native Thomas extended her hitting streak with a game-high three hits in the loss. It was the outfielder's 11th multi-hit game and third-three hit game third this season.

CCU 6, GSU 3 (Game 2)

The Panthers scored three times in the bottom of the third to jump on the Chants to take the early advantage.

Bailey Sexton accounted for all three second-inning runs for Georgia State as the lefty batter knocked in two runs with a double Coastal starter Iyanla De Jesus. Sexton followed it up on the ensuing batter with a stolen base and scored on a throwing error by the CCU catcher.

The Chanticleers scored three runs in the third and fourth innings to tie the score at 3-3 from home runs from Taylor Sweigart and Ally Clegg.

The senior Sweigart came up big in the third as she cut the lead to two runs with a solo home run to right field, her first of the season. After freshman Riley Zana walked to start the fourth, Ally Clegg tied the score at three runs apiece as she blasted her first home run of the season and second of her career.

The Chants completed the comeback in the top of the sixth with three runs on four hits to defeat Georgia State.

Mary Sobataka and Clegg came through with singles before pinch hitter Courtney Dean lined a single back up the middle to bring around Sobataka for the go-ahead run. Two batters later, Thomas doubled to right field to put the Chants up 6-3.

In game two, the two CCU pitchers, De Jesus and reliever Raelee Brabham combined to allow just three hits in the game.

Brabham finished off the Panthers for her third win of the season. The sophomore pitched the final 2.2 innings as she allowed just one hit and struck out three GSU batters.

Clegg had a game-high two hits and tied a game-high with two RBI in the Chanticleer victory.

The Panthers' Sexton had one of the three hits for her team and added in a pair of RBI.

Coastal Carolina and Georgia State will wrap up the weekend series on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Robert Softball Complex
