JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Coastal Carolina track and field team concluded the two-day Tom Jones Invitational on Saturday as it saw two school records broken by Melissa Jefferson and Dallas Wise.
WOMEN
For the third time this season, the sophomore Jefferson made Chanticleer school history by breaking the 100-meter dash record.
In the afternoon, the Georgetown, S.C., native bested her time by five seconds from last week's Gamecock Invitational with a third-place finish at the Tom Jones. Jefferson put her name on the top spot of the school's record book with a time of 11.22 (1.4)
Freshman Jermaisha Arnold also rewrote the school record book in the afternoon.
In the 400 meters, the freshman set a school-best time of 52.63, eclipsing the time she set a week ago at the Gamecock Invitational when she ran 52.91.
Teammate Amaryah White placed in sixth in the 400-meter race with a personal -best time of 54.15.
Jefferson also ran the lead leg of the 4x100-meter relay with Kayla Sweeney, Keniah Wallace, and Mycal Bowser as the foursome finished in fifth place with a season-best time of 45.14.
MEN
The sophomore Wise also made history for the second time this season as he etched his name atop of the triple jump school record list.
On Saturday, Wise jumped to 15.32 meters, good for sixth-place on the day and fifth among collegiate athletes. Earlier this season, the Imro, S.C., native broke the mark of 15.01 meters with 15.12 of his own.
Two Coastal men earned a pair of top 10 performances in the 400 meters.
Freshman Jeremiah Talbert was the first Chanticleer finisher with a time of 48.02, good for sixth-place, and freshman DeVonte Harris finished two spots behind for eighth-place with a personal-best time of 48.14.
The two also combined with seniors Ty Floyd and David Ejumeta for a sixth-place result in the 4x100-relay race with a time of 40.88.
Though 110-meter hurdlers Braydon Bennett and Jaquon Williams didn't make the finals, the two still put together notable times.
Bennett finished one spot outside the nine final qualifiers with a time of 14.09 (0.8) and behind only just four collegiate competitors. Williams finished 14th overall with a personal-best time of 14.30 (0.3).
The Chanticleers return to the track and Florida next weekend as they compete at the UNF Invitational, the 2021 NCAA East Region Preliminaries home.
