Chants add four more to the 2021-22 Roster
CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina University head softball coach Kelley Green has announced the signing of four student-athletes including transfers Shae Schreckengost (Pineville, La. / Michigan State), Madison Redman (Lake Winnebago, Mo. / Butler Community College), and Emily Garza (Richland, Wash. / USC Upstate), as well as local product Jay Wrightsman (Myrtle Beach, S.C. / Socastee High School.
Schreckengost is a graduate transfer from Michigan State who plans to major in the Marine and Wetlands program. The transfer will play behind the plate for CCU after starting for the past two years at MSU. She hit .250 in the COVID-19 shortened 2020 season to go along with a .361 on-base percentage and a .984 fielding percentage. She was injured early in the 2021 season, and after returning to the starting lineup, hit .278 with a .350 on-base percentage.
She was a four-time all-district and three-time all-state honoree at Buckeye High School in Deville, La. She also participated in track and field and picked up a fifth-place finish in the shot put during her senior season at the state championship.
Coach Green on Schreckengost: "Shae has a big bat with some tremendous power potential. She will be a nice addition to our lineup and will add needed consistency and depth behind the plate."
Redman transfers to CCU following an impressive season at Butler Community College where the pitcher received All-America honors following her freshman campaign. She was named a first-team NJCAA and NCFA All-American finishing the season with the top winning percentage in all of the NJCAA at .963. She went 26-1 with a 1.22 earned run average in the circle on the season, which both ranked fourth in the NJCAA.
Redmond averaged 9.07 strikeouts per game finishing with 156 strikeouts in 120.1 innings of work. She led BCC to a fifth-place finish at the NJCAA National Tournament.
Coach Green on Redman: "Maddie is a high-level pitcher with an even more untapped upside. She accomplished a lot in just one year at Butler and we expect her to be an immediate impact in the circle."
Garza is transferring to CCU from USC Upstate where she played in 11 games during the shortened 2020 season. A redshirt freshman, she will have four years of eligibility left with the Chants.
Originally from Richland, Wash., Garza was a standout at Richland High School where she hit over .500 two seasons, including posting a .566 batting average with eight doubles, a home run, and 39 RBIs and 15 stolen bases her senior season.
She was a two-time team captain and was a part of four conference, one region, and one district championship teams. She was a two-sport standout and still holds the school record in three-point percentage.
Coach Green on Garza: "Emily is a versatile athlete who can play and compete anywhere on the field. We are excited to add her drive, determination, and energy level to Team 42."
Wrightsman will not have far to travel to CCU as she hails from just down the road in Socastee. A high school-career .435 hitter, she finished her career with 17 home runs and 56 RBIs. She was a first-team all-region and all-state honoree following her senior season.
She was also a standout in the classroom where she picked up the Brave of the Year Award which goes to Socastee's top student-athlete of the year. Her family knows about Chanticleer athletics as her father Aaron Wrightsman played baseball for the Chanticleers.
Coach Green on Wrightsman: "Jay is a gritty middle infielder who will have the opportunity to make an impact in several areas on the field this year."
