Box Score CONWAY, S.C. – On a night that held just two Top-25 nationally ranked matchups, the No. 25 ranked Coastal Carolina men's soccer team battled No. 14 Kentucky to a 0-0 double-overtime draw at CCU Soccer Stadium, Thursday night.
With the draw, both CCU and Kentucky now are 0-0-1 overall and in C-USA play.
The match was not only the season opener for the Chanticleers, but it was also their first conference match as first-year members of Conference USA.
"I'm incredibly proud of my guys," head coach
Shaun Docking said. "I thought they battled hard against a very good Kentucky team. I think we've got a bright future once we get everybody fit and healthy."
In a match that saw six yellow cards, Kentucky looked to strike early as Cameron Wheeler's shot in the fifth minute was blocked before Martin Soereide played the ball high over the top of the net. At the halftime mark, the Wildcats tallied 10 shots to the Chants' one.
However, it was a tale of two halves as Coastal Carolina tallied three consecutive shots to start the second half, but couldn't convert and 90 minutes was not enough to decide a victor.
Kentucky opened the first overtime period with a shot on goal but it was quickly saved as freshman goalkeeper
Joey Batrouni tallied yet another save on his way to a career-high six saves. Coastal's
Marcello Jones looked to notch the golden goal in the 95th minute but his shot was saved. As the seconds ticked down in the final overtime period
, Ethan Hackenberg's shot to the right side of the goal was saved.
Kentucky ended the night with a 17-10 shooting edge and a 6-5 advantage on shots on frame. Hackenberg,
Dimitris Moraitakis, and
Mads Poulsson each tallied two shots for the Chanticleers, with Moritakis ended with a team-high two shots on goal. CCU found the advantage in the box, as Batrouni's six saves edged out the Wildcats five.
Coastal Carolina returns to the pitch Sunday night, as the Chants will travel and face No. 24 High Point with a 5:00 p.m. ET kickoff from High Point, N.C.
