CONWAY, S.C. - Dallas Wise made history for Coastal Carolina University this summer. The junior got to experience and compete at the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo, taking home a silver medal in the T47 men's high jump event. Being able to represent not only Team USA but also Coastal Carolina was an amazing feeling for the junior South Carolina native.
"I'm speechless, I never thought I would be in this position."
Growing up Dallas didn't travel too often, so just going to Japan was an awesome experience in itself.
"I was there to really just enjoy the experience of being in another country and that's something that money can't buy," Wise shared.
The feeling of being a Paralympian didn't hit until Dallas arrived in Japan. "I always knew I was going to be a Paralympian in my head, I just never knew when," Wise said.
With so many setbacks and obstacles like the COVID-19 pandemic, he wasn't sure when he would finally get the opportunity.
While earning a silver medal is a huge accomplishment, Dallas knew he had the potential to take home gold. "I know earning a medal is a blessing, but I know my potential." Once Dallas received his medal, he realized what he accomplished.
Dallas was projected to win two medals at the Paralympics, one in the high jump and the long jump. He takes only receiving one as motivation to push himself to his fullest potential and receive a gold medal. "I just know it'll feel even better to win gold," Wise added.
Although he is Coastal Carolina's first-ever medalist in either the Olympics or Paralympics, Dallas remains humble and continues to push himself to be the best athlete he can be.
"There are always going to be obstacles all in your life, you just have to overcome them. You can't beat yourself up over it, you just got to work harder." Wise said.
