Coastal Squares off with No. 14 Florida This Weekend in Gainesville

The Chanticleers and Gators will meet for the first time this weekend

CONWAY, S.C. – The Chanticleer women's volleyball team looks to improve on their 6-2 start to the 2021 regular season as they travel to the #14 Florida Gators (4-4) for a pair of weekend matches at the O'Connell Center in Gainesville, Fla.
 
The Chanticleers and Gators will square off for the first time ever with a pair of matches. The weekend slate will begin on Saturday, Sept. 18 at noon ET. The two schools will follow it up on Sunday, Sept. 19 with a 1 p.m. first serve. Both matches will be available on SEC+.

LAST TIME OUT
  • In a trio of matches last weekend, the Chanticleers earned a sweep of the Chanticleer Classic with wins over East Carolina, Radford, and UNCW. Graduate Doris Carter led Coastal with 31 kills in the three victories, including notching 14 and 13 kills respectively in the two matches versus East Carolina and Radford. Setter Marija Borcic quarterbacked Coastal to the three victories with three-straight 20-assist performances. The Serbian native also notched her second four-ace match of the season in the 3-1 win versus Radford. In the same match versus the Highlanders, fellow setter Brigitta Petrenko notched her 12th career double-double with 18 assists and 10 digs.
  ONE WIN SHY AWAY FROM 250
  • Head Coach Jozsef Forman is one win away from career win 250 after the Chanticleers defeated East Carolina, Radford, and UNCW during last weekend's the Chanticleer Classic.
  1000-KILL WATCH
  • The graduate Carter tallied 31 kills in the three victories during the Chanticleer Classic, including notching 14 and 13 kills respectively in the two matches versus East Carolina and Radford, pushing her career total to 953.
  • Saada, a graduate transfer from Syracuse, comes into this weekend with 943 career kills. Saada played in one match last weekend where she tallied four kills versus East Carolina on Sept. 9.
  • Bozdeva has spent three of her four seasons playing for the Chanticleers, where she has amassed 898 putaways. The Razlog, Bulgaria native tallied 25 kills with a .333 hitting percentage in the three matches versus East Carolina, Radford, and UNCW. She had 10 kills apiece versus ECU and Radford, while coming up one dig shy of a double-double versus the Highlanders.
  • Jones, a transfer from UTEP, had 829 career kills with the Miners. The Missoula, Mont. Native totaled 24 kills, eight digs, and six blocks during the three-day Chanticleer Classic (Sept. 9-11). Jones matched her season-high of 12 kills in the 3-1 defeat of Radford.
 PETRENKO CONTINUES TO MOVE UP IN THE RECORD BOOK
  • Junior setter Brigitta Petrenko is ninth all-time in school history with 1930 career assists. However, she currently is 70 assists shy of the 2000 career mark and 170 shy of 2014 graduate Sam Skyrd's 2067 tally for eighth all-time.
CCU DIGS PERUGINI
  • Junior Lina Perugini ranks 29th in the nation at 5.07 digs per set. Perugini notched her fourth 20-dig performance of the season in the 3-1 win over Radford with 22.
CHANTS VERSUS RANKED TEAMS
  • It will be the first time since 2017 that a CCU team will meet a top 25 opponent on the volleyball court. CCU lost to No. 9 Creighton on Dec. 12, 2017 during the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
  • This weekend's matches with No. 14 Florida will be the first time since Sept. 9, 2017 that Coastal Carolina will meet a top 25 opponent during the regular season.
  • The Chanticleers are 0-9 lifetime versus the top 25.
SERIES HISTORY – FLORIDA
  • This weekend will be the first time Chanticleers and Gators will have met on the volleyball court.
  A GLIMPSE AT FLORIDA
  • The No. 14 Gators lost to unranked Florida State on Wednesday night in Tallahassee, Fla. in four sets, 3-1. Sofia Victoria had a career-day for the Gators, posting a team-leading 24 kills on the night. T'ara Ceasar added 10 kills, followed by six from Thayer Hall and five from Lauren Forte.
  • Ceasar leads Florida with 104 kills on the season followed by Hall's 74.
  • Setter Marlie Monserez quarterbacks the Gators attack with a team-high 303 assists on the year. Monserez comes in the match as the 32nd ranked setter in the NCAA with 10.54 assists per set.
