CARY, N.C. – After totaling six wins in singles play yesterday, the Coastal Carolina University men's tennis team picked up two wins in doubles play in the Main Doubles Draw at the 2022 ITA Carolina Regional Championships on Saturday in Cary, N.C.
 
On the first day of doubles play at the regional championships, the Chanticleers' duo of Ryuya Ata and Maj Tomac were victorious in the round of 64, defeating the team of Uddayvir Singh and Alejandro Solares of Davidson 7-5, 6-4 to advance to the second round.
 
Also winning their first-round match in the Main Doubles Draw was the pair of Steve Mundt and Carlos Berna Ruiz. The tandem held on for a 7-5, 4-6, 10-7 win over the team of Javier Matos and Juan Sebastian Dominguez Collado of Presbyterian College to join Ata and Tomac in the round of 32.
 
In the round of 32, both of the Chanticleers' pairs faced seeded teams. Ata and Tomac battled to the very end in a 6-7 (8), 6-2, 10-7 defeat to Martins Rocens and Fons Van Sambeek of NC State, while the team of Mundt and Berna Ruiz suffered a 6-4, 6-4 loss to the duo of Andrew Zhang and Michael Heller of Duke.

Also playing on Saturday in doubles play was the team of Lucas Wayenburg and Neil O'Connor, as the CCU duo opened up their first-round match with a 6-2 win before ultimately falling to the duo of Pedro Rodenas and Garrett Johns of Duke 2-6, 6-2, 10-7.
 
In singles play, Berna Ruiz was narrowly defeated by No. 6-seeded Melios Efstathiou of Wake Forest in straight sets 6-4, 7-6 (10-9) in the round of 32 of the Main Singles Draw, while freshman Rivers Cahill was handed a 6-2, 6-2 defeat in the round of 32 in the consolation bracket to Adam Duan of Wake Forest.
 
The Chants will look to reschedule the Chants vs. Bulldogs Scramble for later this month to wrap up their fall slate.
