Coastal Returns to the Road, Faces Georgia State on Friday Night

Chants look to pick up first SBC win

CONWAY, S.C. – After a week off from competition, the Coastal Carolina men's soccer team (3-3-3, 0-0-2 SBC) returns to the road and is set to face Georgia State (7-2-1, 2-1-0 SBC) in a Sun Belt Conference matchup on Friday at 7 pm. ET in Atlanta.

COASTAL VS. GEORGIA STATE
Friday night's matchup will mark the 20th all-time meeting between Coastal Carolina and Georgia State. In a series that dates back to the 70s, CCU holds an 11-6-2 advantage over GSU.

The two teams last faced off in the Sun Belt Tournament Championship game on November 15, 2020. Both teams went scoreless through 110 minutes of action. Still, Coastal Carolina outscored the Panthers 4-3 in penalty kicks to advance to the NCCA Tournament that was held in the spring of 2021.

LAST TIME OUT
The Chants are coming off a 0-0 draw with the then No.3-nationally ranked Herd last Thursday night at home.

Marshall tallied the first shot of the match, as Milo Yosef's shot was saved by CCU goalkeeper Joey Batrouni just five minutes into the match. Batrouni tallied his second save of the night in the 21st minute, as The Herd recorded its second shot on goal via Adam Aoumaich.
The Herd tallied five shots in the opening 45 minutes, but the Chanticleer defense battled to keep Marshall out of the box.

Coastal's Eythor Kjartansson recorded the Chants' first shot of the match in the 69th minute, as the freshman fired a ball toward the bottom corner of the net only to see it saved by Marshall's Oliver Semmle. Noe Santos tacked on Coastal's second shot-on-goal in the 77th minute but his attempt was also collected by The Herd's goalkeeper to keep the score level.

DEARLE DOES IT
Senior defender Peter Dearle was named the Sun Belt Conference Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday. Dearle was a key piece of the CCU backline that helped the Chanticleers draw with then-No. 3 nationally-ranked Marshall 0-0 in a Sun Belt Conference matchup on Thursday, Sept. 29, and earn another point in the conference standings.

The Nottingham, England, native was one of just five Chants to play all 90 minutes against The Herd.

CHANT TALK
  • Alvaro Garcia-Pascual leads the Chanticleers in total goals scored (six) and points (12), while Maurice Hauser sits second on the team with his three goals and six points. Santos and Jones each have added two scores, while Santos has provided three assists.

Redshirt freshman Randy Burkhardt picked up his first collegiate start on the road at Furman, as the Pennsylvania native has now seen 112 minutes in goal while recording nine saves – seven of which came against Furman.
SCOUTING THE PANTHERS
  • Senior forward Max Wilkins was named the Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week, following Georgia State's victory over Georgia Southern, 4-2. Wilkins scored two goals in Saturday's win over in-state rival Georgia Southern. He was the only SBC player to score two goals last week.
  • The Panthers have 21 total goals so far this season while allowing their opponents to score 14. Justin Mclean, Mario Arrocha, Simon Carlson, and Max Wilkins control the offensive efforts for GSU as all four have scored three goals this season.
