LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Coastal Carolina football's defensive line coach
Skylor Magee has been named a nominee for the 2022 Broyles Award, which honors college football's top assistant coaches, the Frank & Barbara Broyles Foundation announced this week.
The 51 nominees in this year's class were selected from approximately 1,500 assistant coaches representing 131 FBS programs across the country. The Broyles Award selection process includes the
Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), broadcasters, a college football hall-of-fame selection committee, and current college head coaches.
Magee has been a key component in helping build the Coastal defense up from his first season in 2019 to date. He has mentored/guided three All-Americans, one freshman All-American, one Conference Defensive Player of the Year, and seven all-conference honorees in the last three years at CCU.
In his fourth season at the beach, he has coached three All-Americans in Tarron Jackson, C.J. Brewer, and
Josaiah Stewart, including CCU's first-ever Consensus All-American in Jackson in 2020. Twice, he has had players set the program's single-season sack record - Jackson and Stewart - while Stewart led the nation in sacks for a true freshman in 2021. He has also coached one Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year honoree (Jackson) and seven All-Sun Belt selections during his time at CCU and has played a huge part in CCU going 31-4 over the last three seasons.
A total of 10 different members of the defensive front have at least 1.0 tackle-for-loss this season, while nine have at least 0.5 sacks this season. Preseason All-Conference nose tackle and defensive co-captain
Jerrod Clark leads the way with 37.0 tackles, 8.5 tackles-for-loss, 2.5 sacks, and five quarterback hurries, while first-year Chant
Ja'Quon Griffin has added 15.0 tackles, 5.5 tackles-for-loss, 3.5 sacks, three quarterback hurries, and one forced fumble. Senior defensive tackle
Kennedy Roberts has had a career year this season with 19.0 tackles, 3.5 tackles-for-loss, 1.5 sacks, four quarterback hurries, one pass breakup, and two fumble recoveries.
This season, the Chants defense ranks second in the Sun Belt and ninth nationally with 21 turnovers forced. They also rank 18th nationally in tackles-for-loss at 7.0 per game and 18th in sacks at 2.90 per contest. Led by his group up front, the Chants have held six teams to under 100 rushing yards this season and are allowing just 125.6 yards on the ground this year.
A 43-member selection committee of distinguished former head coaches, broadcasters, and a committee representing the FWAA will select 15 semi-finalists, five finalists from the list of nominees, and an overall winner.
The 2021 Broyles Award winner was Josh Gattis, who was the offensive coordinator at the University of Michigan. Gattis is now the offensive coordinator at the University of Miami. Previous winners are not eligible to be nominated for the Broyles Award until the completion of three seasons.
Proceeds from the 2022 Broyles Award support the Broyles Foundation's mission to provide a game plan for Alzheimer's caregivers through education, support, and resources. The Broyles Foundation can be followed on
