JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Coastal Carolina beach volleyball opened the 2022 spring season with a pair of wins over Erskine and St. Leo on day one of the Dolphin Duels hosted by Jacksonville University in Jacksonville, Fla.
The Chanticleers dropped just one match on the day, going 9-1 on the day.
Coastal Carolina 4, Erskine 1
The Chanticleers got off to a great start to the 2022 season, picking up a 4-1 win over Erskine (0-1) to begin the season at 1-0.
Newcomer
Raychel Ehlers and junior
Madison Allred started the day by cruising to a 21-11, 21-15 win on court No. 5 to stake the Sandy Chants to a 1-0 lead.
After Coastal took a 2-0 lead with a 21-15, 21-16 victory on court No. 2 by the tandem of
Sarah Riedell and
Madie Lichty, the Flying Fleet posted a win at court No. 4 in three sets at 21-15, 15-21, 15-12 to cut the Chants' lead in half at 2-1 with two matches to play.
CCU earned victories in each of those two bouts, as
Ellie Hanford and
Natalie Honzovicova dominated on court No. 3, winning 21-13, 21-8, while in the top flight the Conference USA Preseason All-Conference duo of
Irena Drobnjak and
Martine Kragholm sealed the 4-1 win in straight sets, 21-16, 21-15.
Coastal Carolina 5, St. Leo 0
The Chanticleers improved to 2-0 on the season with a 5-0 blanking of St. Leo's in their second match of the day.
Ehlers and Allred improved to 2-0 on the day with a 21-4, 21-8 win over Breanna Reinhard and Amanda Doherty of St. Leo on court No. 5, while on court No. 4
Emma Gonzalez and
Carli Ginther held on to dominate the third set in a 21-14, 15-21, 15-5 win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The next three contests went in favor of the women in black and teal, as Hanford and Honzovicova downed Ally-Reese Williams and Emma Miller 21-18, 21-7 on court No. 3, while Riedell and Lichty improved to 2-0 with a 21-18, 22-20 win over Aliya Fredette-Huffman and Leeann Potter on court No. 2.
At the No. 1 flight, Drobnjak and Kragholm were victorious by a score of 21-13, 21-16 over Nina Vattovaz and Jeanette Henderson to complete the sweep.
The Sandy Chants (2-0) will take on Palm Beach Atlantic tomorrow at 10 a.m. ET and then turnaround to play host Jacksonville at 4 p.m. ET.
