CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina beach volleyball team wrapped up its weekend with a Sunday sweep on day two of the CofC Classic, as the Sandy Chants shut out Jacksonville 5-0 and then held on to defeat Eastern Kentucky 3-2 to end the day at 2-0 and the weekend at 3-1.
With the Sunday two-match sweep, the Chanticleers moved to 11-4 overall on the season.
Coastal Carolina 5, Jacksonville 0
The Chants jumped out to a 2-0 lead in their first match of the day, picking up wins on courts No. 4 and 5.
The duo of
Raychel Ehlers and
Carli Ginther earned a straight-set victory over Macie Murphy and Macie Sacristan 21-17, 21-14 on court five, while the pair of
Emma Gonzalez and
Kalin Eske followed at No. 4 with a victory over the Dolphins' pair of Miller Reames and Giao Huynh at 21-19, 21-7.
The No. 2 duo of
Irena Drobnjak and
Madie Lichty secured the match win with a 21-14, 21-9 over the Jacksonville pair of Emily Kubicsko and Sydney Eckhardt.
CCU's
Ellie Hanford and
Natalie Honzovicova scored their 13th win as a pair in the morning contest, defeating the duo of Jenna McNamara and Olivia Szyskiewicz 21-15, 21-11.
To close out the match, the No. 1 flight of
Martine Kragholm and
Sarah Riedell swept the JU team of Shaylee Befus and Anna Dunbar 21-19, 21-18 for the 5-0 match win.
Coastal Carolina 3, Eastern Kentucky 2
The Chants would have to battle at all five flights to earn a 3-2 over Eastern Kentucky in the afternoon match.
The match would be square at 1-1 after the first wave of bouts, as the Chants on the board first with a 21-2, 21-8 dominating win by the duo of Ginther and Ehlers on court No. 5.
After, the Colonels responded with 21-18, 21-18 straight-set victory on court No. 4, the duo of Hanford and Honzovicova put the Chants back in front in the match at 2-1 with a 21-12, 21-10 at the No. 3 flight.
The Chants clinched the match at the No. 2 flight, as Drobnjak and Lichty earned a 19-21, 21-12, 17-15 three-set victory to get the third-dual point for the women in teal.
The Colonels closed the match with a win at the top flight, earning a three-set win at 7-21, 24-22, 18-16 to put the final score at 3-2.
Coastal will host its first of two tournaments this weekend, as CCU will welcome Tusculum, Erskine, and Jacksonville State to Conway, S.C. for the Coastal Carolina Invitational on March 19-20.
