Coastal Carolina women’s lacrosse to hit the road with a two-game winning streak

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team scored early and often en route to a 19-7 victory over in-state foe Winthrop on Friday afternoon in Conway, S.C. With the win, the Chanticleers improved to 4-4 on the year, while the Eagles dropped to 1-6 with the loss.

Coastal's offense was led by Megan Bozzi, Abi George, Kayla Downey, Devin Rybacki, Monica Manley, and Hannah Calarco as all six players tallied two goals each. Also adding to the offensive surge was Hannah Close, Lauren Cremen, Sydney Fox, Riley Glackin, Sydney Tornetta, Bethany Bruck, and Sofia D'Avella with one goal apiece for the Chants. Winthrop was paced by Molly Dankowski with the hat-trick while Claire Witmer finished with two goals. Lauren Asher and Ellie Dutton each tallied one goal.

Defensively, Coastal played both goalkeepers with each seeing 30 minutes of action. Claire Martell finished with six saves while allowing just two goals, while Kennedy Manning made a career-high nine saves in the win. Just like the Chants, the Eagles saw a pair of goalkeepers see action with Kelsey Johnson allowing 17 goals, while Maddy Hodgson stopped seven shots and allowed just two scores.

The Chanticleers dominated the Eagles by outscoring the visitors 17-2 in the first 30 minutes of action. CCU's George tallied the first goal of the match off the assist from Hannah Demis for the early 1-0 lead with just 36 seconds expiring from the game clock. Winthrop evened the score up at 1-1 as Dankowski filled the net on the unassisted tally. Over the next 29:05, CCU solidified the contest with a 16-1 run for the 17-2 score at the intermission.

In the second half, Coastal was able to get some younger players some valuable time on the field. The Eagles opened the second half action looking to seize the momentum by scoring the first three goals before the Chanticleers' Calarco stopped the bleeding with her second goal of the day. Asher and Dutton recorded the final two goals for the Eagles to cut into the host team's lead. CCU's D'Avella scored her first career goal with 2:40 remaining in the contest for the final tally of 19-7.

Coastal Carolina will return to action on Sunday, March 27, as the Chanticleers will travel to Nashville, Tenn. to take on the Vanderbilt Commodores. The opening draw is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
