CCU improves to 3-2 in Sun Belt play

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's tennis team met Appalachian State at the Stevens Tennis Complex in a Sun Belt Conference clash on Wednesday morning, as the Chanticleers used a strong effort from start to finish to shut out the Mountaineers 4-0.

In doubles, the Chants responded after facing early deficits. On court one, Jesse Hollins and Victoire De Samucewicz trailed by three games but came back to defeat Helena Jansen and Ellie Murphy 7-5, which forced a split of the first two doubles contests.

The decisive match unfolded on court three as Anna Babayan and Megan Hopton faced a 5-1 deficit. Babayan and Hopton then proceeded to win six of the next seven games, which gave them a 7-6 (7-4) triumph and the doubles point to the Chants.

In singles play, Valentina Urelli picked up a 6-0, 6-3 win over Brooke Gruber on court six, while Paola Landin Lopez recorded a strong 6-4, 6-1 victory over Ellie Murphy on the third court, staking CCU to a 3-0 advantage in the overall match. Anna Babayan clinched the overall match win with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Virginia Poggi on court four.

Coastal Carolina (8-7, 3-2 SBC) will return to action on Saturday, March 26, in an 11 a.m. ET road match against Arkansas State.
