MOBILE, ALA. – The Coastal Carolina softball team dropped its third straight contest of the weekend by a score of 3-0 to South Alabama at Jaguar Field on Sunday afternoon.
CCU dropped to 14-20 overall and 1-11 in Sun Belt Conference play with the loss, while USA improved to 15-14 overall and 8-1 in conference play with the win.
The Jaguars tallied an early 3-0 advantage on the Chanticleers in the first inning, as South Alabama's Caroline Nichols drew a lead-off walk before Mackenzie Brasher singled past first base to advanced Nichols. Victoria Ortiz then sent an RBI triple to the left-field wall to send home Nicholas and Brasher to put the host up 2-0. Kamdyn Kvistasd followed with a single that allowed Ortiz to cross home and make the score 3-0.
Payton Ebersole became the Chants first base runner of the day in the top of the third, as the sophomore drew a walk but would be left on base.
In the top of the fourth inning,
Keirstin Roose broke up Olivia Lackie's no-hitter with a single to right-center field before advancing to second base on a wild pitch. However, back-to-back outs left the freshman stranded and the Chants off the scoreboard through four innings of play.
Ebersole tallied Coastal's second hit of the day with a single to left-center field which was followed by a
Makiya Thomas single up the middle to advance Ebersole to second in the top of the sixth, yet the Chants would leave both runners stranded.
South Alabama looked to add to the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth, as Gabby Stanger singled to right field before Belle Wolfenden drew a walk to advanced Stanger to second base. CCU got back-to-back fly outs to leave two Jags on base.
In the circle,
Iyanla De Jesus (0-3) suffered the loss, as the junior gave up three runs off of three hits and walked two Jaguars.
Mady Volpe saw 6.0 innings of work on the day, as the freshman took over for De Jesus in the first inning. The Lansdale, Pa. native struck out five and allowed just two hits.
Coastal Carolina returns to action with back-to-back midweek contests as the Chants welcome the College of Charleston to Conway on April 5 for a doubleheader before facing off against Campbell on April 6.
