CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team battled the No. 15 preseason nationally-ranked Wake Forest Demon Deacons to a 1-1 draw in the Chanticleers' first exhibition on Sunday night at the CCU Soccer Stadium.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Joey Batrouni set the tone for the Chants in the 14th minute, as Wake Forest was awarded a penalty kick on a foul called in the box on Coastal. The San Antonio, Texas, native came up big with a save to keep the score at 0-0. The remainder of the first half saw little action as neither team was able to break the score line in the opening 45 minutes of play.
Following the halftime break, the Chanticleers wasted no time in breaking the tie as
Noe Santos sent in a corner kick that teammate
Mael Couteau headed into the back of the net to put the Chants up 1-0 in the 47th minute.
However, just seven minutes later, Wake Forest's Leo Guarino evened the score at 1-1.
In the 71st minute, senior
Alex Kinateder was shown his second yellow of the match, which resulted in an automatic red card and forced the Chanticleers to play a man down the remainder of the match. Notably, between the two teams, six total cards were shown.
Wake Forest found the advantage in total shots 9-8, including a slight edge in shots on goal, as well as winning the corner kick battle 6-3, but the Demon Deacons were called offsides four times to the Chants zero.
Coastal will remain at home and welcome another ACC foe in NC State to Conway for its final exhibition match of the season on Aug. 20. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET.
