Men’s Soccer Earns First Victory of 2022 Season

Chants tallied program win No. 500

Box Score CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team convincingly tallied program win number 500 on Thursday night as the Chanticleers downed USC Upstate 4-1 at the CCU Soccer Stadium.

With the win, CCU improves to 1-0-0 overall while Upstate falls to 0-1-0 overall.

The Chants wasted no time showing their offensive power as Coastal newcomer Maurice Hauser connected on a pass from teammate Noe Santos just 15 seconds into the match to give the host a 1-0 lead early.

Santos joined the scoring party for the Men in Teal, as the sophomore headed in a cross from Eybor Kjartansson in the 20th minute to increase Coastal's lead to 2-0 early. Alvaro Garcia-Pascual connected on a pass from Danny Cabrera just before halftime, marking the third goal of the night in the 34th minute giving Coastal a 3-0 advantage.

In his first minutes as a Chanticleer, freshman Christian Cook notched his first career goal on a long ball from Joey Batrouni, as Cook beat the Spartans goalkeeper to find the corner of the net and give the Chants a 4-0 advantage in the 72nd minute.

Notably, all four of Coastal's goals came from underclassmen, three of which saw their first minutes in Teal against the Spartans.

The Spartans' lone goal of the night came via Aundrin Zumbul in the 76th minute after he beat a diving Iu Pentinat on a pass from teammate Felipe Marty.

CCU found the advantage in total shots at 15-11, including a slight edge in shots on goal at 4-2, as well as winning the corner kick battle, 6-4. The Chanticleers were called offsides four different times, while the Spartans drew the flag just once.

Coastal kicks off a three-match road series on Sunday, Aug. 28, when the Chanticleers will face William & Mary before traveling to do battle with UNCG (Sept. 2) and preseason No. 25 Campbell (Sept. 5).
