George F. Sasser Athletics Hall of Fame Announces 2022 Class

The class includes 11 inductees

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University Department of Athletics is thrilled to announce the 2022 class that will be inducted into the Sasser Hall of Fame this fall.
 
The class includes eight standout student-athletes in Andrew Beckwith (baseball), Ikeiylah Brown (women's track & field), Alex Cunningham (baseball), Dock Doyle (baseball), Jason Flanagan (men's track & field), De'Angelo Henderson (football), Taylor Motter (baseball), and Lena Schaeffner (women's golf).
 
The Sasser Hall of Fame will also welcome several non-student-athletes this year, including President Emeritus David A. DeCenzo, Ph.D., and the first two head coaches of the Chanticleer football program in David Bennett and Joe Moglia. In a show of program solidarity, Moglia nominated Bennett, unaware that Moglia had also been nominated for the Hall of Fame. Both will be present on Oct. 14 for the first of two inductions this fall.
 
The 2016 Coastal Carolina baseball College World Series National Championship team, which was inducted as part of the 2021 class, will also be recognized the weekend of the Nov. 12 game versus Southern Miss.
 
Following are brief bios on both the 2022 Hall of Fame classes:
 
Class of 2022

Dr. DeCenzo - 2022 Hall of Fame Class

 
President Emeritus David A. DeCenzo, Ph.D. – University President (2007-20)
 
David A. DeCenzo, Ph.D., honorably served as the second president of Coastal Carolina University for more than 13 years from 2007 to 2020. His presidency centered on elements that aptly characterize his life and leadership – tradition, integrity, and excellence. During his time at CCU, DeCenzo presided over the most transformative era in CCU history, directed initiatives that enhanced both the academic and athletic reputation of the University, and oversaw $300 million in new and renovated facilities. He also led the athletic program's transition to the Sun Belt Conference and Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) level, spearheaded the expansion of numerous athletic facility upgrades and directed the establishment of new women's athletic programs in lacrosse and beach volleyball.


David Bennett - 2022 Hall of Fame Class
 
David Bennett – Football (2003-11)
 
Bennett was the first-ever head football coach in Coastal Carolina history, starting the program from the ground up in 2002. Named the 2006 Sportexe National FCS Coach of the Year, Bennett was also a 2006 Eddie Robinson FCS Coach of the Year finalist and a two-time Big South Coach of the Year, earning the honor in 2004 and 2010. During his nine seasons at Coastal, he won four Big South Championships (2004, 2005, 2006, 2010) and posted a 63-39 overall record. He coached 32 All-Americans and 89 All-Big South selections. He also mentored two Big South Offensive Players of the Year, one Big South Defensive Player of the Year, and one Big South Freshman of the Year. He was also named to the 2002-09 Big South Football All-Decade Team.


Joe Moglia - 2022 Hall of Fame Class
 
Joe Moglia – Football (2012-16, 2018)
 
Named the 2015 Eddie Robinson FCS National Coach of the Year, Moglia took the football program to new heights in his six seasons on the sidelines. A four-time Eddie Robinson FCS National Coach of the Year Finalist (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015) and two-time Liberty Mutual FCS National Coach of the Year Finalist (2012 and 2013), Moglia was also named the 2014 AFCA FCS Region 2 Coach of the Year and was a two-time Big South Coach of the Year, earning the honor in both 2012 and 2014. Moglia was also named the 2015 South Carolina Football Hall of Fame Humanitarian of the Year and was the 2017 Vince Lombardi Hall of Fame Award winner and a Lombardi Hall of Fame inductee.
 
Moglia won four conference championships (2012, 2013, 2014, and 2016) and posted a 56-22 overall record in six seasons as the head coach for the Chanticleers. Moglia, who had his teams ranked No. 1 in the country in both 2014 and 2015, led the program to its first-ever postseason win in 2012 before setting both a Big South and CCU record with 12 wins in both 2013 and 2014. A proven leader, he led the transition to the FBS level and the Sun Belt Conference, going 10-2 overall in the first year of the transition in 2016. He coached five Walter Payton/FCS National Offensive Player of the Year finalists and four Buck Buchanan/FCS National Defensive Player of the year finalists. He also coached 33 All-Americans and 76 all-conference selections. Named to the 2010-19 Big South Football All-Decade Team, the Coastal Carolina University Sasser Hall of Fame induction will mark the 10th hall of fame that Moglia has been inducted into in his career.
 

Andrew Beckwith - 2022 Hall of Fame Class

Andrew Beckwith – Baseball (2012-17)
 
Named the 2016 NCAA College World Series Most Valuable Player and earning a spot on the 2016 College World Series All-Tournament Team, Beckwith was a key member of the 2016 National Championship team. He was tabbed a 2016 All-American, picking up first-team honors from HERO Sports, second-team accolades from Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball, and honorable mention recognition from Perfect Game. He won the 2016 Greg Olson Award for the "Breakout Player of the Year", was recognized by the 2016 Touchdown Club of Columbus as the National Male Athlete of the Year, and was named both the 2016 Big South's Howard Bagwell Male Athlete of the Year and the 2016 Big South Conference Pitcher of the Year.
 
A two-time All-Big South Conference selection, garnering first-team honors in 2016 and second-team accolades in 2017, the right-handed pitcher led the Big South Conference in 2016 in both wins (15) and ERA (1.85). His 15 wins are a CCU single-season record. He ranks second in CCU's career record books with a 1.91 walks per nine innings ratio, fourth with 102 appearances, and is tied for fifth with 32 career wins.
 
Drafted in the 32nd round by the Kansas City Royals in the 2017 MLB Draft, Beckwith was named to the 2010-19 Big South Conference Baseball All-Decade Team.
 

Ikeiylah Brown - 2022 Hall of Fame Class

Ikeiylah Brown – Women's Track & Field (2006-10)
 
Brown is one of the most decorated student-athletes in Coastal Carolina history, as she is a 10-time Big South Champion, having won five conference championships in both indoor and outdoor track & field. A two-time Big South Outdoor Track & Field Most Outstanding Athlete Award winner, winning it back-to-back years in 2009 and 2010, Brown earned All-Big South Conference honors in 20 combined events, six for indoor and 14 for outdoor.
 
She was the Big South Indoor Track & Field Champion in the 60-meters, 200-meters, and part of the 4x400-meter relay team in 2010, after winning the 200-meters individual championship in 2009 and the 60-meters in 2008. Brown was the Big South Outdoor Track & Field Champion in the 100-meters, 200-meters, 4x100, and 4x400-meter relay in 2009 and was part of the 4x100-meter relay championship team in 2007.
 
A 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship and three-time NCAA preliminaries qualifier (2007, 2009, and 2010), Brown was named to both the 2000-09 Big South Women's Outdoor Track & Field and the 2010-19 Big South Women's Indoor Track & Field All-Decade teams.


Alex Cunningham - 2022 Hall of Fame Class
 
Alex Cunningham – Baseball (2012-17)
 
A member of the 2016 National Championship team, Cunningham was tabbed a 2017 Collegiate Baseball second-team All-American in his final year at CCU. A three-time All-Big South selection, earning first-team honors in 2017, second-team accolades in 2016, and honorable mention recognition in 2015, he was a three-time Big South Pitcher of the Week award winner in 2017. Cunningham was also twice named the Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week and the NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week in 2017.
Cunningham recorded two complete-game shutouts in 2017 – tied for the most by a pitcher in CCU's single-season history – and led the team in wins with seven in 2017. He also led the team in strikeouts in both 2016 (98) and 2017 (117) and innings pitched in both 2016 (119.1) and 2017 (106.0). He led the Big South Conference in innings pitched in 2016 (119.1) and strikeouts in 2017 (117).
 
Overall, Cunningham ranks third in CCU's career record books in the lowest opponent batting average at .226, fifth in career strikeouts with 295, tied for seventh in most games started by a pitcher with 46, and eighth in most innings pitched with 315.0 innings. He was first drafted following his junior season in the 28th round by the Detroit Tigers in the 2016 MLB Draft but returned to Coastal for his senior year in which he was then selected in the ninth round by the San Diego Padres in the 2017 MLB Draft.
 

Dock Doyle 2022 Hall of Fame Member

Dock Doyle – Baseball (2004-08)
 
A native of Conway, S.C., Doyle was a 2008 Collegiate Baseball and Ping! Baseball second-team All-American selection and one of three finalists for the 2008 Johnny Bench Award finalist. A 2007 NCAA Myrtle Beach Regional and 2008 NCAA Conway Regional All-Tournament team selection, Doyle was also named to the 2008 ABCA/Rawlings All-Region team. He was named the 2008 Big South Player of the Year and earned a spot on both the All-Big South first team and the 2008 Big South Championship All-Tournament team.
 
Doyle, who led the Big South in RBIs with 72 in 2008, was named a Ping! National Player of the Week and a two-time Big South Player of the Week (2008), as he led the team in hitting, hits, RBIs, and slugging percentage. Named to the 2000-09 Big South Baseball All-Decade team, Doyle was drafted first in the 44th round by the Atlanta Braves in the 2007 MLB Draft before being chosen in the fifth round by the New York Mets in the 2008 MLB Draft.
 

Jason Flanagan - 2022 Hall of Fame Class

Jason Flanagan – Men's Track & Field (2009-11)
 
CCU's record holder in the javelin, Flanagan was a 2012 USTFCCCA second-team All-American with a 16th-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The 2012 NCAA Championship qualifier, was also a three-time NCAA East Preliminary round qualifier (2010, 2011, 2012), and a 2009 USATF Junior National Championship qualifier. A two-time Big South Champion in the javelin (2010 and 2012), Flanagan was a three-time All-Big South performer (2010, 2011, and 2012) and still holds the Big South and CCU school record in the javelin throw at 73.01 meters (239-06).
 

DeAngelo Henderson - 2022 Hall of Fame Class

De'Angelo Henderson – Football (2012-16)
 
A member of the four conference championship teams (2012, 2013, 2014, and 2016), Henderson set the NCAA Division record by scoring a touchdown in 35 consecutive games (all 14 games of 2014, all 12 games of 2015 all nine of his games in 2016) over his final three years at Coastal Carolina.
 
A two-time Walter Payton Award National Offensive Player of the Year finalist (2015 and 2016), Henderson was also a 2015 STATS National Offensive Player of the Year finalist, and a two-time All-American (2015 and 2016). Tabbed the 2016 CCU Football Transition Committee Offensive Player of the Year and the 2015 Big South Conference Offensive Player of the Year, the running back was a 2016 CCU Football Transition Committee first-team selection and a two-time All-Big South first-team selection (2014 and 2015). A four-time Big South Conference Player of the Week and named a Big South Conference Freshman of the Week in 2013, Henderson was a 2015 Freddie Solomon Community Spirit Award finalist.
 
Henderson etched his name throughout the Coastal Carolina record book. He ranks first, second, and third in CCU's single-season record book in all-purpose yards per game, second, third, and fourth in CCU's single-season record book in rushing yards, and second, third, and fourth in CCU's single-season record book in rushing touchdowns. He is also CCU's all-time career leader in rushing yards with 4,635 career yards, rushing attempts with 721 career rushes, and rushing touchdowns with 58 career rushing touchdowns. Henderson is also CCU's all-time career leader in total points scored with 386 career points and in touchdowns scored with 64.
 

Taylor Motter - 2022 Hall of Fame Class

Taylor Motter – Baseball (2008-11)
 
Motter, who helped lead the Chanticleers to three consecutive NCAA Regionals in 2009, 2010, and 2011, was perhaps one of the best defensive shortstops in Coastal Carolina baseball program history. A 2009 Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American, Motter was named to both the 2010 NCAA Myrtle Beach Regional All-Tournament team and the 2010 All-Big South first team. In 2010, he was also named a CollegeBaseball360.com National Player of the Week and a Big South Player of the Week.
 
Named to the 2011 Big South Championship All-Tournament team, Motter ranks fourth in CCU's career record books in most fielding assists (501), fifth in doubles (53), and sixth in double plays turned (96) for the Men in Teal. He was drafted in the 17th round by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 2011 MLB Draft and made his major league debut on May 16, 2016.
 

Lena Schaeffner - 2022 Hall of Fame Class

Lena Schaeffner – Women's Golf (2012-16)
 
Tabbed the 2015 Big South Women's Golfer of the Year, Schaeffner was a three-time All-Big South selection (2014, 2015, and 2016) and a four-time member of the Big South All-Championship Team (2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016). Named to the 2015 Golfweek All-Raleigh Regional team, the native of Germany played in two NCAA Regional events and was the first Chanticleer to advance to the NCAA National Championships as an individual.
 
Schaeffner, who earned a spot on the 2013 Big South All-Freshman team, was a nine-time Big South Women's Golf of the Week winner and finished her career ranked second in the Coastal Carolina record book with a career scoring average of 74.50. She finished the 2015 season with a Coastal Carolina single-season record scoring average of 72.94 to go along with a school-record three event victories -- the Palmetto Intercollegiate, 3M Jaguar Intercollegiate, and the Big South Championship. She was also a four-time WGCA All-American Scholar and named the 2016 Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
