CONWAY, S.C. – Head coach
Shaun Docking and the Coastal Carolina men's soccer team will wrap up a three-game road trip on Sunday in a non-conference match at Furman. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. ET from Greenville, S.C.
COASTAL VS. FURMAN
Sunday's match marks just the seventh meeting between CCU and Furman, with the Paladins holding a 3-2-1 advantage over the Chants.
The two programs last faced off on Sept. 12, 2014, in Conway, a 1-0 Furman victory.
LAST TIME OUT
Coastal looks to return to the win column after falling on the road in a non-conference matchup against then-No.10/12 Charlotte, 6-1, on Wednesday night.
Charlotte found the back of the net just three minutes into the contest to give the 49ers a 1-0 lead.
Coastal's
Alvaro Garcia-Pascual leveled the score in the 13th minute, as the sophomore converted a penalty kick following a handball call on Charlotte in the box to make the score 1-1. Notably, Garcia-Pascual's goal is just the second goal the 49ers have allowed this season.
The 49ers regained the lead in the 24th minute as Kameron Lacey sent a ball into the top left of the goal and put Charlotte up 2-1.
Following the halftime break, Charlotte sent in a corner kick that missed the heads of multiple 49ers and found Sean Suber, who connected with the ball to put the host squad in front at 3-1. Charlotte increased their lead just five minutes later on a cross from Callum Watts that Filip Jauk fired into the corner of the net to make the score 4-1.
Charlotte added two more goals in the 66th and 68th minute before
Joey Batrouni was shown his second yellow card of the match in the 68th - resulting in a red card and the Chanticleers having to play a man down the remainder of the match.
CHANT TALK
- Garcia-Pascual leads the Chanticleers in total goals scored (five) and points (10), while Maurice Hauser sits second on the team with his three goals and six points.
- Batrouni has started all seven games between the pipes for Coastal, seeing 591:01 total minutes and tacking on 23 saves (.590 save percentage). Redshirt freshman Randy Burkhardt picked up his first minutes of the season on the road at Charlotte, logging 21:14 minutes and adding two saves in his CCU debut.
SCOUTING THE PALADINS
- Furman earned national recognition earlier this week, as the Paladins were picked 10th in the United Soccer Coaches South Region Poll on Wednesday afternoon.
- Alfredo Diaz-Santillan holds the offensive reigns for Furman, his four goals (eight points) lead all scorers while Christian Kraus has added more for the Paladins. The pair accounts for six of the 10 goals so far this season.
- The Paladins finished the 2021 regular-season 7-9-1 overall and 4-2-0 in Southern Conference (SoCon) play. In the 2022 preseason poll, Furman was picked to finish tied with Mercer for second place – earning 19 points. Notably, Jake Raine and Josh Hosie were named to the Preseason All-SoCon Team.
