CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina men's tennis continued its opening weekend of play with a dual match versus the Wofford Terriers, as the Chanticleers won six of the 11 bouts on the day at the Coastal Carolina Battle of the Beach Hidden Duals in Conway, S.C.
"Both teams played tough today," said head coach
Chris Powers. "Wofford plays with a lot of tenacity and it was good to be in those tough situations today."
In singles competition, the Chants picked three wins, as four of the seven matches went three sets.
CCU's
Ryuya Ata was victorious at the top flight, as he defeated Ashe Ray in three sets, 7-5, 2-6, 6-1. Fellow newcomer
Maj Tomac won 6-3, 6-1 over Will Fullett on court No. 5, while the Chants' other win came from veteran
Neil O'Connor, who held on for a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 win over Ian Rasheed at the No. 6 flight.
In doubles play, the Chants took three of four matches highlighted by a 7-6 (4) win by the team of Ata and Tomac at the No. 2 flight.
The other two wins came by identical scores of 6-3, as
Steve Mundt and
Carlos Berna Ruiz took the win at No. 1, while O'Connor and
Guilherme Toresan were victorious on court No. 3.
After the first two days of the Battle of the Beach Hidden Duals, the Chants are 17-6 overall.
The Chants will return to action to take on the Campbell Fighting Camels tomorrow at 10 a.m. ET.
