GREENVILLE, S.C. – In a South Carolina derby, the Coastal Carolina men's soccer team walked away with a 3-1 victory in a non-conference match on the road at Furman on Sunday afternoon.
The Chanticleers snapped a five-game winless streak to improve to 3-3-2 overall with the win. With the defeat, the Paladins drop to 5-2-1 overall.
In his first career start, Coastal's
Randy Burkhardt was massive in goal for the Chants in the victory, as the redshirt freshman made a career-high seven saves in the match that saw the Paladins attempt 15 shots, eight of which were on goal.
Coastal Carolina took an early 1-0 lead over Furman as
Eythor Kjartansson found a driving
Marcello Jones, who passed to
Alvaro Garcia-Pascual. Garcia-Pascual sent a quick touch back to Jones, who notched his second goal of the season off a rebounded shot in the 22nd minute. However, Furman leveled the score just three minutes later as the Paladins' Tommy Redhead converted a penalty kick to even the match a 1-1.
The Chanticleers answered in the 30th minute as
Danny Cabrera drove towards the net and sent a pass into
Noe Santos, who notched his second goal of the season to make the score 2-1 in favor of CCU.
Garcia-Pascual notched his team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 67th minute, as the sophomore headed in a pass from teammate
Dimitris Moraitakis to give the Chanticleers a 3-1 advantage.
Coastal Carolina returns to Sun Belt Conference play for the remainder of the season, as the Chants welcome No. 4-nationally ranked Marshall to the CCU Soccer Stadium on Friday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m. ET.
