COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University women's indoor track & field team opened up the 2023 spring season with a total of 24 top-10 finishes at the Gamecock Opener on Saturday, highlighted by wins from
Alexis Glasco in the 60-meter hurdles,
Ellie Wolski in the 3000-meters run, and
Camryn Lorick in the high jump.
CCU dominated in the 60-meter hurdles, as Glasco picked up the win with her time of 8.49, placing in front of
Sydney Clemens (8.62) in second,
Amanda Kinloch in third (8.73), and
Nikki Boon (9.10) in fourth in the finals heat. Kinlock's prelmins time of 8.69 was the ninth-best time in program history.
In the 60-meter dash, the Chanticleers had three top-10 finishers, as in the finals,
Kayla Sweeney crossed the finish line in third overall with a time of 7.52, finishing ahead of fellow Chants Glasco (7.55) and Clemens (7.62) who placed fifth and sixth overall. Clemens' time of 7.62 was not only a personal-best but also ranked in 10th in CCU's record books.
Zahria Jones just missed out on the finals heat in the sprint event, placing ninth in the preliminaries with a time of 7.90.
The Chants continued their run of top-10 finishes in the 200-meter dash, as
Amaryah White posted a runner-up finish with a personal-best time of 25.00, while
Lauren Gordon took third place with her time of 25.09, also a personal best. Kinloch placed sixth overall in her first meet as a Chant with a time of 25.54.
First-year Chant
Brianna Tillman posted an eighth-place finish in the 400-meters with a time of 59.28, while in the 800-meters freshman
Tiarra Smith crossed the finish line in a time of 2:26.25.
In the distance events, Wolski picked up a first-place finish in the 3000-meter run with a time of 10:07.53, while
Amilia Wise-Sweat recorded a third-place finish in the 1-mile run with a personal-best time of 4:58.96. Her time was also the eighth-best mark in the 1-mile run in CCU's indoor track & field history.
Lorick highlighted the field events for the Chants on Saturday, as the sophomore set a new personal best and facility record with a leap of 1.68 meters in the high jump event to take first place overall. Her mark of 1.68 meters also was tied for the second-best mark in CCU's annals. Fellow Chant
Kadasia Evans also earned a top-10 finish in the high jump event, placing sixth overall with a mark of 1.50 meters.
In the pole vault event, returner
Kynnedy Dennis scored a third-place finish with a height of 3.60 meters, while in the long jump, Boon placed seventh overall with a personal-best distance of 5.63 meters, also besting the facility record and climbing into the top 10 in CCU's records. Newcomer
Mia Lewis finished ninth in the long jump event with a mark of 5.28 meters in her first event as a Chant.
Also posting a top-five finish in her first meet as a Chant was freshman
Claire Spiller, who took third place overall in the women's triple jump event with a mark of 11.36 meters.
In the throws events, sophomore
Zayna Fray-Samuel picked up a second-place overall finish in the weight throw event with a new personal-best mark of 17.74 meters, which was the third-best mark in CCU's history, while fellow second-year Chant
Lauralyn Clifford finished fifth in the shot put with a mark of 12.50 meters and sixth in the weight throw with a personal-best distance of 15.99 meters. Her mark of 15.99 in the 20-pound weight throw set a new St. Lucia national record.
The Chants added a pair of top-five finishes in the 4x400-meter relay, as the "A team" of
Amelia Canetto, Gordon, Glasco, and White placed second overall with a facility record time of 3:48.51, while the "B team" of Sweeney, Tillman, Kinloch, and Boon finished fourth with a time of 4:02.53.
Coastal will return to Columbia, S.C., next week to compete in the Carolina Challenge on Jan. 20-21.
