Box Score HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team fell 6-1 to No. 1 Marshall in Huntington, W.Va., on Friday night.
With the loss, the Chants fall to 3-5-3, 1-2-2 Sun Belt, and Marshall improves to 12-0-0, 5-0-0 Sun Belt.
The Thundering Herd showed why they are ranked No. 1 in the nation when they took an early 1-0 lead in the seventh minute of play as Braian Amaro netted the first goal of the night off an assist from Morris Duggan and Alexander Stjernegaard.
Less than a minute later, the Thundering Herd struck again when Pablo Simon crushed the ball into the bottom right corner off an assist from Mathew Bell to make the score 2-0.
The Chants were outshot 5-1 in the remainder of the first frame with Coastal's lone shot coming off Noah Lechelt's boot on a freekick attempt in the 37th minute that was blocked away to hold the score at 2-0.
The Chants trimmed the Thundering Herds lead in half in the 49th minute when Doug Hainer slotted the ball to Kari Sigfusson whose outstretched boot flicked the ball onto Deryn Armstrong. Armstrong then chipped the ball over the Marshall keeper's head to make the score 2-1.
Marshall answered back in the 52nd second minute when Simon netted his second goal of the match to help the Thundering Herd regain control of the match at 3-1.
The Marshall offense did not let up and notched three more goals in the 64th, 69th, and 86th minutes to secure the 6-1 win.
The Chanticleers will be back in action at the CCU Soccer Stadium on Oct. 18 to take on UCF. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET.
