Chapel Hill, N.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's tennis team began its run in the ITA Carolina Regionals in Chapel Hill, N.C. today in the opening round of singles qualifying and doubles play.
The Lady Chants sent four representatives to this year's ITA Regionals, Anna Babayan, Kata Foldeak, Jesse Hollins and Aida Maria Mitrache, all of whom were in action today in both the qualifying round of singles, as well as the opening round of doubles.
The day started off with seniors Foldeak and Hollins in the round of 64 in the main draw of singles, both against opposition from Wake Forest. Foldeak fell to the Demon Deacon's Whitley Pate, while Hollins outlasted Maryam Ahmad by a score of 6-3, 1-6, 7-5. Mitrache later featured in a singles match of her own, losing out to Charleston Southern's Amila Jusufbegovic 6-1, 6-3.
Following her opening round win, Hollins advanced to the second round of 32 where she faced UNC Wilmington's Alicia Eberwein. Hollins continued her recent hot streak, advancing into tomorrow's final 16 by a score of 6-0, 6-3.
In the consolation round of singles qualifying, Foldeak was narrowly beaten by Mariana Reding from Elon, while Mitrache picked up her first win of the tournament after beating Nour Gueblaoui from North Carolina A&T State.
Following a string of wins in the singles bracket, the Lady Chants then moved into the opening round of doubles matches. The pair of Babayan and Hollins fell short of the second round, losing to NC State's Gina Dittmann and Maddy Zampardo in the A1 bracket. Foldeak and Mitrache later beat a pair from UNC Wilmington to advance to tomorrow's second-round of A2 doubles.
Day two of the ITA Carolina Regionals from Chapel Hill, N.C. will start tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. ET, with Hollins in her round of 16 singles match against Duke.
