Cary, N.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team marked its return to the ITA Carolina Regionals today in Cary, N.C.
CCU has featured in the ITA Regional Tournament each year dating back to the 2009-10 season when the Chants put two singles players and a doubles team into the quarterfinals of each bracket.
Kicking off this year's regional, the Chants opened with five singles matches in the main draw. Seniors Carlos Berna Ruiz and Lucas Wayenburg continued their positive run of form, advancing to the second round of 32 after defeating UNC Charlotte's Peter Murphy and College of Charleston's Pietro Martinetti, respectively.
Seniors Jesus Garcia, Ryuya Ata and Guilherme Toresan fell short of the second round, each losing in straight sets.
Following their opening round victories, Berna Ruiz and Wayenburg featured in the round of 32, each facing opposition from Campbell University. Both Chants were unable to advance to tomorrow's round of 16, each losing in straight sets.
The ITA Carolina Regionals from Cary, N.C. will continue tomorrow, with Garcia starting in the singles consolation bracket at 9 a.m. ET.
