CLINTON, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's team scored its first win of the spring season in a big way, sweeping the Presbyterian College Blue Hose 7-0 on Monday afternoon in Clinton, S.C.
With the win, CCU improved to 1-4 on the young season. The loss dropped PC to 2-9.
Playing in their third match in four days, the Chanticleers took all three doubles bouts and won all six singles matches in straight sets.
The team of
Tatum Burger and
Lilie Steryous got the day going with a 6-0 beat down of PC's Valentina De Sousa and Varvara Nikolaeva on court No. 3. The next two contests both went in favor of the Chants at 6-3, as the duo of
Anna Babayan and
Megan Hopton won at No. 1, while
Jesse Hollins and
Victoire De Samucewicz were victorious on court No. 2.
With a 1-0 match lead, the Chants carried over the momentum into the singles play, sweeping the Blue Hose.
Hollins recorded the first singles win of the day in dominant fashion, winning 6-0, 6-1, over Nikolaeva on court No. 5, while her doubles partner De Samucewicz picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win over Claudia Sanchez on court No. 2.
The winning ways continued for the Chants, as Hopton held on for a 6-3, 7-5 win over McKenzie Davis on court No. 3, while Burger followed with a 6-3, 6-3 straight-sets win over Madison Dennett on court No. 4.
Playing on court No. 1 in the top flight, Babayan defeated Lucianna Piedra in straight sets 6-3, 7-5, while CCU's
Isabella Weatherhead won by retirement against De Sousa in the second set, 7-6, 5-4.
Coastal will return to the road this Thursday, Feb. 23, to take on the Campbell Fighting Camels in Buies Creek, N.C. The match time is slated for 2 p.m. ET.
