CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team will host the Elon Phoenix on Sunday, Feb. 26, at Brooks Stadium on the campus of Coastal Carolina University. The opening draw is scheduled for noon ET in Conway, S.C.
Coastal enters the week 1-1 after falling to Davidson 13-8 in its last outing last Sunday, while the Phoenix enters play 2-2 on the year.
COASTAL vs. ELON HISTORY
The Chanticleers and the Phoenix will be meeting for the ninth time in a series that began in March 2014. Coastal trails in the all-time series 7-1, with the Chants earning a 15-14 overtime win last season.
ABOUT COASTAL
The CCU offense is led by newcomer
Hope Steuerwald (6 goals) for six points, while returners
Kayla Downey (2 goals, 2 assists),
Avery McIlwaine (4 goals), and
Brigid Cardillo (2 goals, 2 assists) all are close behind with four points each. Newcomer
Gabrielle Beckett has added three points on one goal and two assists. The offense is ignited by
Devin Rybacki and McIlwaine, as the duo has won 10 and eight draw controls, respectively.
Defensively, the Chants are anchored by their starting goalkeeper
Claire Martell, who has allowed nine goals and stopped nine shots in almost 70 minutes between the pipes on the season. Backup goalkeepers
Charlotte Sadler and
Kennedy Manning both saw action in the second half versus season-opener with both making one save.
Claudia Kelly forced three turnovers and grabbed two groundballs to help return possession back to the offense.
ABOUT ELON
The Phoenix are led by Cierra Hopson (8 goals, 2 assists) with 10 points, while Anna Hackett (8 goals) and Sammy Fisher (6 goals) have added eight and six points all on goals. Fisher often gets the offense started by winning 19 of the 34 Elon draw controls to lead the team.
Defensively, the Phoenix has used a pair of goalies with Caitlin Walsh earning two starts and Chloe Herghelegiu having made one start in goal. Herghelegiu has appeared in three games and made 19 saves and allowed 17 goals, while Walsh has made seven saves and allowed 13 goals. Mikaela Buoscio and Hackett disrupt the opposing offense having caused eight and five turnovers, with Jessie Penner and Kailee Follette leading the Phoenix with 10 and seven groundballs, respectively.
