Josh Uduje scored 13 points and
Essam Mostafa added 11, but Coastal Carolina fell to Arkansas State 73-57 in Sun Belt Conference action Saturday afternoon at the First National Bank Arena in Jonesboro, Ark.
The Chanticleers struggled from the field only hitting 38.2 percent (21-of-55) of their shots, including only 3-of-17 (17.6 percent) on their three-pointers. CCU did manage to hit 12-of-16 free throws, as they fell to 10-14 overall and 4-8 in Sun Belt play with the loss.
Poor shooting was not CCU's only problem, as the Chants committed 15 turnovers, many of which were unforced. Those turnovers led to 19 Arkansas State points.
Mostafa added a game-high nine rebounds as CCU outrebounded ASU 37-31. A total of 11 of those rebounds were on the offensive end and led to 13 second-chance points. The Chants also outscored ASU 34-26 in the paint and CCU's bench outscored the home team 30-13.
Arkansas State's Caleb Fields scored a game-high 19 points, while teammates Omar El-Sheikh and Terrance Ford scored 16 points each.
ASU finished the game shooting 44.0 percent (22-of-50) from the field and connected on 8-of-23 (34.8 percent) on their three-point attempts. A-State hit 21 of their 29 free throw attempts with El-Sheikh going 10-of-15. With the win, the Red Wolves moved to 10-15 overall and now stand at 2-10 in conference action.
CCU will return home for a four-game home stand starting on Feb. 9, when the Chants will host Marshall at 6 p.m. ET. Three more home contests will follow to conclude the HTC schedule. The stretch includes games versus James Madison at 2 p.m. ET on Feb. 11, Georgia State at 7 p.m. ET on Feb. 16, and Texas State at 2 p.m. ET on Feb. 18.
