MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's and men's track & field teams had several strong performances on day two of the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational on Friday, March 17, as the Chanticleers totaled 19 top-10 finishes.
The women's team will enter the final day of competition tomorrow in second place overall in the team standings with 68 points and behind only Duke and the Blue Devils' 122 points.
The men's team is in third place after the first two days of competition, behind Duke (56) and Slippery Rock (39).
Women's Team
Coastal's women's team posted a strong day two at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational on Friday, as the Women in Teal totaled 11 top-10 finishes, highlighted by wins from Alexis Glasco (100-meter hurdles) and Molly Jones (5000-meters).
The Chants dominated the 100-meter hurdles yet again, as Glasco crossed the finish line first with a time of 13.01 (+4.8) in the finals. She finished ahead of fellow Chants Sydney Clemens (13.43) and Amanda Kinloch (13.50), who placed fourth and fifth overall. However, their times were all wind-aided (+4.8), which is over the +2.1 limit and thus does not count towards the NCAA qualifying times or record books.
However, Glasco did set a meet record in the prelims of the 100-meter hurdles with her time of 13.27 (+2.1), while Kinloch posted a new personal-best mark of 13.80 (+2.1), which is also the ninth-best time on CCU's performance list.
CCU added a fifth-place finish in the 100-meters by junior Kayla Sweeney (11.58 (+2.5)), while in the 5000-meters the Chants went 1-2 with Jones winning the race with a personal-best time of 16:50.46 and was followed by Ellie Wolski with her second-place time of 17:39.43. Jones' mark was the fourth-best time in CCU history.
In the field events, the Coastal women's team had five top-10 finishes, highlighted by a second-place finish in the pole vault combined event from freshman Olivia Lee (3.05 meters), as well as a second-place finish in the women's pole vault A flight event by Kynnedy Dennis with her height of 3.50 meters.
Sophomore Zayna Fray-Samuel and her personal-best mark of 56.35 meters, which is the fourth-best mark in CCU history, picked up a third-place finish in the hammer throw event, while in the long jump event, two Chants placed in the top 10 in Keiran Martin (5.65 meters) and Mia Lewis (5.39 meters), who finished seventh and 10th, respectively.
Men's Team
The men's team nearly matched the women's team with eight top-10 finishes on Friday at Doug Shaw Stadium.
In the field events, two Chants recorded a top-10 showing on Friday, as freshman Deondre Hardy placed fifth in the long jump event with his mark of 7.09 meters, while thrower Aaron Keeler finished eighth overall in the javelin throw with a personal-best mark of 51.52 meters.
On the track, Hardy recorded a second-place finish in the 100-meter finals with a time of 10.57 (+2.8), finishing just in front of teammate Reggie Barlow in third with his time of 10.69 (+2.8).
In the 100-meter qualifying round, newcomer Brendan Kovar crossed the finish line in seventh with a time of 10.98 (+4.8), while in the 800-meters open Isaiah Thomas placed eighth overall with his time of 2:05.60.
CCU had four Chants make the finals of the 110-meter hurdles, with Albrey Gossett (14.38 (+2.9)) and Jaquon Williams (14.42 (+2.9)) finishing third and fourth overall, respectively, while Tyler Graves (false start) and Braydon Bennett (DNS) did not finish.
Two more Chants posted top 10 showings in the 5000-meters, as sophomores Tomas Duncan (15:30.95) and Ethan Blackwelder (15:49.91) finished in third and ninth, respectively, in the distance event.
Day three of the meet will begin tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. ET at Doug Shaw Stadium.
