CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina softball team advanced to 28-9 on the season after securing a 5-0 shutout against Georgia Southern on Sunday to complete a three-game Sun Belt Conference series sweep.
The Chants wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning on a leadoff single from
Diamond Williams, a sacrifice bunt by
Riley Zana, and a single to right center field by
Delaney Keith put runners on first and third base. Senior
Iyanla De Jesus then cleared the bases when she smashed a two-run double down the left-field line to put CCU up 2-0.
CCU notched one more run in the bottom of the third inning when Keith hammered her eighth home run of the season over the left-field line wall to make the score 3-0.
Coastal kept the ball rolling in the bottom of the fourth inning after a hit by pitch and a sacrifice bunt from
Livi Payne put a runner on second.
Keirstin Roose then stepped up to the plate and belted a two-run home run over the center-field wall to extend CCU's lead to 5-0.
The Chants held on to their lead for the remaining innings with
Nicolette Picone recording three groundouts in the top of the seventh inning to give Coastal the 5-0 win.
Picone improved to 7-2 with the win, recording three strikeouts while giving up just four hits in 4.2 shutout innings of work in the circle.
The Chanticleers will be back at St. John Stadium on Tuesday to face Charlotte. First pitch is at 4 p.m. ET.
