COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's and women's track & field teams combined to post 21 top-10 individual finishes on Saturday at the USC Open hosted by the University of South Carolina in Columbia, S.C.
Leading the way for the Chanticleers was
Zayna Fray-Samuel with a mark of 57.53 in the women's hammer throw event,
Sydney Clemens with her time of 13.22 (2.9) in the women's 100-meter hurdles, and
Garrett Wilkins with his time of 10.28 (2.4) in the men's 100-meter dash.
The Chanticleers will head back to the Sunshine State for the East Coast Relays hosted by the University of North Florida on April 28-29 in Jacksonville, Fla.
Women's Team
Posting runner-up finishes on Saturday was Fray-Samuel in the hammer throw,
Keiran Martin in the long jump, and
Camryn Lorick in the high jump.
Fray-Samuel's mark of 57.53 in the hammer event was good enough for second-place overall but was also the third-best distance in CCU's outdoor track & field history. Martin placed second in the long jump event with a personal-best leap of 5.66 meters, while Lorick recorded a runner-up finish in the high jump with a height of 1.69 meters.
Clemens turned in a third-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles finals with a time of 13.22 (2.9), which would have been the second-fastest time in school history had it not been wind-aided (2.1 or higher).
First-year Chant
Amanda Kinloch placed fifth overall in the 100-meter hurdles with her time of 13.62 (2.9), which also would have been a top-five mark in the school's record books if not wind-aided, while sophomore
Alexis Glasco picked up two top-five finishes on the day, placing third overall in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.43 (4.1) and fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.43 (3.2). Both times would have been etched her name into the CCU all-time performance list if not wind-aided.
Also picking up top-10 finishes on the track on Saturday was
Kayla Sweeney (23.78 (3.2)) finishing eighth in the 200-meters and
Lauren Gordon (55.16) crossing the finish line in 10th overall in the 400-meters.
In addition to Fray-Samuel's runner-up finish in the hammer throw, CCU's
Kynnedy Dennis finished fourth in the pole vault invite event with a mark of 3.71 meters,
Olivia Lee placed fourth in the pole vault event with a height of 3.00 meters, and
Claire Spiller finished seventh in the triple jump with a distance of 11.90 meters.
Men's Team
On the men's side, Wilkins highlighted the one-day event with a time of 10.28 (2.4) in the 100-meters, which placed him ninth overall but also would have been a new CCU school record for the sprint event if not wind-aided.
In the 110-meter hurdles event, three Chants reached the finals and placed in the top-eight, as
Braydon Bennett (13.94 (5.0)) finished fifth, just in front of fellow teammates
Jaquon Williams (14.10 (5.0)) in sixth and
Albrey Gossett (14.33 (5.0)) in eighth overall.
First-year Chant
Trey Kraimer finished 10th overall in the 800-meters with a time of 1:54.77, while three other Chants picked up top-10 finishes in the field events.
Deondre Hardy finished sixth in the long jump with a leap of 6.92 meters,
Aaron Keeler placed seventh in the javelin throw with a distance of 51.57 meters, and
Michael Martello recorded a ninth-place finish in the hammer throw with a mark of 46.63 meters.
