Chants Down A-State; Advance to Quarterfinals of the SBC Championships

Chants moved to 17-7 overall with the win

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga.  – The No. 3 Coastal Carolina women's tennis team downed the No. 14 Arkansas State Red Wolves 4-0 in the first round of the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Women's Tennis Championship Tournament on Wednesday evening in Peachtree City, Ga.
 
With the win, CCU moved to 17-7 overall and advanced to the quarterfinals of the championship tournament.
 
Despite waiting five hours to take the court due to rain and wet court conditions, the Chanticleers came out on fire, dominating in doubles play to pick up the doubles point and take an early 1-0 lead.
 
The Chants, who controlled the play on all three courts, picked up a quick 6-1 win on court No. 2 from the All-Sun Belt Conference second-team duo of Victoire De Samucewicz and Jesse Hollins while playing for the first time together all season, the team of Anna Babayan and Kata Foldeak cruised to a 6-2 win on court No. 3.
 
Coastal remained on fire in singles play, as Hollins dispatched of Sofia Vdovychenko 6-1, 6-1 on court No. 2, while All-Sun Belt second-team selection and the Player to Watch Babayan dominated in a 6-3, 6-0 win over Rebecca Brody on court No. 2.
 
Sealing the win for the Chants was Sun Belt Co-Newcomer of the Year Tatum Burger, as the super senior won in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 over Yasmine Humbert to send the Women in Teal into the quarterfinals with the 4-0 win.
 
In the three unfinished matches, the De Samucewicz (6-3, 2-3), Foldeak (7-6 (7-2)), and Lilie Steryous (7-5, 2-0) all led in their respective matches when the match was decided.
 
Coastal advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Women's Tennis Championship Tournament to take on the winner of No. 6 Marshall and No. 11 ULM on Thursday at 2 p.m. ET.
