Chants’ Season Comes to an End at 2023 Sun Belt Women’s Tennis Championship

Chants finished the year at 17-8 overall
PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. – The No. 3 seeded Coastal Carolina women's tennis team dropped the doubles point for only the sixth time all season in a 4-1 loss to the No. 6 seeded Marshall Thundering Herd in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Women's Tennis Championship on Friday evening in Peachtree City, Ga.
The match, which was originally scheduled to take place on Thursday at 2 p.m. ET, was postponed to Friday due to rain and then delayed three more hours due to more inclement weather in the morning.
The loss ended the Chants' season at 17-8 overall.
The Chanticleers found themselves down 1-0 early in the match, as the Thundering Herd posted wins on courts No. 1 and 2 in doubles play to secure the doubles point and the match lead.
On court No. 1, the Chants fell 6-0 before suffering a 6-2 defeat on court No. 2.
At the time the point was decided, the Chants' duo of Anna Babayan and Kata Foldeak were in front 4-3 of Marshall's tandem of Gabrielle Clairotte and Rieke Gillar on court No. 3.
CCU quickly tied the match up at the start of singles play, as Sun Belt Conference Co-Newcomer of the Year Tatum Burger won in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 on court No. 3.
However, Marshall pulled back out in front at 2-1 with a win on court No. 4, as Coastal's Jesse Hollins battled back from a 6-1 loss in the first set to take the second set 6-4 and force a third and decisive set which went in favor of the Herd's Aisling McGrane at 6-3 to give Marshall the three-set 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 match win.
The Herd picked up another three-set win on court No. 6 to extend the lead to 3-1, as Marshall's Sophia Hurrion came from behind to upend the Chants' Lilie Steryous 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 in another tight contest.
With two of the three remaining matches in the third set, the lone match in the second set was settled as the Herd's Andjela Lopicic held on to defeat the Chants' Foldeak 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 on court No. 5 to give Marshall the 4-1 match win.
CCU's season ended with five different Chants recording double-digit wins in singles play and three different pairs tallying double-digit victories for the year.
