MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Coastal Carolina sophomore
Alexis Glasco won gold in the 100-meter hurdles and was one of nine Chanticleers to medal overall at the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
In addition to her first-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles on day three of the conference championship meet, Glasco earned silver medals with runner-up finishes in the 100-meter dash, 400-meter hurdles, and as part of the 4x100-meter relay team along with
Sydney Clemens,
Amanda Kinloch, and
Kayla Sweeney.
Winning silver medals on the men's side over the weekend was
Deondre Hardy in the long jump event on Friday and
Braydon Bennett in the 110-meter hurdles on Saturday.
The men's team also added a bronze medal in the 4x100-meter relay, as
Albrey Gossett,
DeVonte Harris, Hardy, and
Ashlund Dixon raced to a third-place finish.
Overall, the women's team finished fifth in the team scores with 77 points, behind champion Arkansas State (144), Texas State (107), South Alabama (97), and Southern Miss (80.5).
The men's team placed ninth overall in the team standings, as Arkansas State (168.5) completed the sweep with the team win.
Women's Team
Leading the way for the women's team on Saturday was a total of 11 top-eight finishes on the final day of the championship meet.
Glasco won the 100-meter hurdles event with a time of 13.06 (+3.4), while Clemens placed fourth overall in the sprint hurdles event with her time of 13.40 (+3.4).
In the 100-meters, Glasco raced to a runner-up finish with a personal-best time of 11.29 (+0.9), while Sweeney finished fourth overall with her personal-best time of 11.42 (+0.9). Both times rank in the top five of CCU's all-time performance list, as Glasco's mark is the second-best in school history and Sweeney's is the third-fastest.
Glasco added another runner-up finish on the day, this time in the 400-meter hurdles with her time of 58.58, while Sweeney recorded her second individual top-five finish on the day with a fourth-place showing in the 200-meters with a time of 23.41 (+3.2).
On top of the individual top-five finishes, the quartet of Clemens, Glasco, Kinloch, and Sweeney finished second overall in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 44.61.
Also recording top-five finishes for the Women in Teal on Saturday was junior
Lauren Gordon, who finished fourth overall with a personal-best time of 54.94 in the 400-meters, and junior
Molly Jones, who raced to a fifth-place finish in the 5000-meters with her personal best time of 16:47.63. Both times rank in the top 10 on CCU's all-time performance list.
In addition, the 4x400-meter relay team of Gordon, Kinloch,
Amelia Canetto, and Glasco finished fifth overall with a season-best time of 3:44.14, while in the high jump event, sophomore
Camryn Lorick placed in a tie for seventh overall with her high-mark of 1.65 meters.
Men's Team
The men's team capped the three-day conference championship meet with six top-10 finishes on Saturday, highlighted by a runner-up finish in the 110-meter hurdles from Bennett with a new personal-best time of 13.84 (+1.3). His mark is the third-fastest in CCU history.
The two relay teams then scored third and fourth-place finishes, respectively. The 4x100-meter relay team of Gossett, Harris, Hardy, and Dixon finished third overall with a season-best time of 40.39, while the 4x400-meter relay unit of
Brendan Kovar,
Isaiah Thomas, Harris, and
Robert Johnson placed fourth overall with a season-best time of 3:12.94.
Also scoring top-10 finishes on the final day for the Men in Teal was Kovar with a fifth-place finish in the 400-meters with a time of 47.88,
Trey Kraimer with a sixth-place showing in the 800-meters with his time of 1:54.38, and
Garrett Wilkins with a seventh-place finish in the 100-meter dash with his finals time of 10.46 (+2.5).
