Box Score CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team recorded its first win of the 2023 season after defeating the William & Mary Tribe 2-1 on Monday afternoon at the CCU Soccer Stadium.
With the win, the Chants tie up their record at 1-1 on the year while William & Mary drops to 1-1.
The Chants got off to a quick start in the opening period when a long ball was delivered to Noe Santos, who utilized his 6-6 frame to flick a header on to sophomore Christian Cook, who drilled the ball into the bottom left corner to give Coastal a 1-0 lead after just eight minutes of playing time.
CCU pulled ahead in the 35th minute when Deryn Armstrong intercepted a rogue William & Mary pass at the halfway line, which allowed him to drive towards the goal and force a foul in the penalty box. Armstrong stepped up to the spot and kept his cool, slotting the ball into the bottom right corner to give the Chants a 2-0 lead.
At the halfway mark, the Chants led the Tribe 7-6 in both shots and fouls while the Tribe led 3-0 in corner kicks.
The Chants were quick out the gates in the second half, taking two shots in the opening three minutes but neither could make its way to the back of the net.
William & Mary answered right back to these threats in the 52nd minute when a counterattack saw Lucas Caldas net the Tribe's first goal off an assist from Merlin Luke-Miny and Aidan Morrison to narrow the gap to 2-1.
The match was extremely physical throughout the remainder of the second half with Coastal leading 13-9 in fouls and each team picking up a yellow card.
However, the Chants were able to secure the 2-1 victory with the help of six crucial saves of 14 shots from Coastal keeper Kilian Valant.
The Chanticleers will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 1, at the CCU Soccer Stadium as they take on USC Upstate at 7 p.m. ET.
