GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team began its 2023 fall campaign with a strong showing at the Spartan Fall Invitational in Greensboro, N.C.
The Chants opened up the tournament against host UNC Greensboro, with the pair of super seniors
Ryuya Ata and
Carlos Berna Ruiz coming away with a 6-4 doubles victory. Later, seniors
Jesus Garcia and
Guilherme Toresan picked up a 6-4 win against a pair of Spartans.
CCU's next opponent was the Longwood Lancers, a pairing in which the Chants took all three doubles matches by scores of 6-3, 6-4, and 6-2. Ata and Berna Ruiz and Garcia and Toresan claimed their second wins on the day, with
Lucas Wayenburg and
Goncalo Ferreira picking up their first.
Coastal's final opposition of the opening day at the Spartan Fall Invitational was the Campbell Fighting Camels. Once again, Coastal won all three doubles matches, this time by scores of 6-4, 6-2, and 6-1. The pairings of Ata and Berna Ruiz and Garcia and Toresan continued their unbeaten streak, completing a 3-0 start to the tournament. Waynesboro and Ferreira claimed their second win, going 2-1 on the day.
"The guys have really put the work in on the practice court the first few weeks of the semester and it showed today on the match court," head coach
Chris Powers said after Friday's action. "We take on a very solid Campbell squad in singles in the morning and hopefully we can carry this team momentum into those matches."
Day two at the Spartan Fall Invitational from Greensboro, N.C., will start tomorrow at 9 a.m. ET.
