Chants and Monarch’s Square Off in Virginia

CONWAY, S.C. –  The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team squares off against the Old Dominion Monarchs in Norfolk, Va., on Sept. 30 for a 7 p.m. ET kickoff.

Chant Talk
  • CCU has a 3-3-2, 1-0-1 Sun Belt record this season.
  • Coastal's three wins have come against William & Mary (Aug. 28), USC Upstate (Sept.1), and No. 12 James Madison (Sept. 23).
  • Deryn Armstrong leads the team with six points from two goals and two assists. Both of his goals have been game-winners and one of his assists set up the game-winning goal versus USC Upstate (Sept. 1).
  • Kilian Vallant is first in the Sun Belt and 28th in the nation with 4.43 saves per game.
  • The Chants have not lost a match when they have been the first team to score.
  • CCU is in search of its first road win of the season posting a 0-0-1 record while on foreign soil.
Last Time Out
  • The Chants secured their first win versus a ranked opponent of the season when they beat the No. 12 James Madison Dukes 3-2 at the CCU Soccer Stadium on Sept. 23.
  • Louis Bock was first to get the Chants on the scoreboard in the 18th minute when he belted the ball into the bottom right corner off an assist from Doug Hainer.
  • The Dukes rallied back with two goals in quick succession in the 22nd and 24th minute to take the lead 2-1.
  • Junior Noe Santos leveled the score at 2-2 in the 39th minute when he drilled the ball in from the penalty spot.
  • Armstrong was the hero for the Chants when he scored the game-winning goal in the 68th minute off an assist from Asgeir Magnusson to give CCU a 3-2 win.
  • CCU trailed in shots (18-13), corners (10-8), and fouls (12-10) and led 9-8 in shots on goal.
History Against
  • The Chants have a 5-1-1 all-time series record versus Old Dominion.
  • This will be their seventh encounter and CCU has a 3-0-1 record while on the road.
  • In the last matchup, Coastal scored two early goals in the first frame and went on to win 2-1.
  • CCU has outscored the Monarchs 17-7 and has delivered two shutout victories.
  • Coastal's lone loss came in a neutral site match in September 2010 when ODU took a 1-0 win.
Scouting the Opponent
  • ODU has a 3-0-5, 1-0-1 Sun Belt record on the season.
  • Last time out, the Monarchs beat the 2022 Sun Belt Conference champions Kentucky 1-0 when Karan Mandair scored the lone goal in the 52nd minute from the penalty spot.
  • Mandair leads the team with three goals, which ranks him tied for four in the Sun Belt in goals scored.
  • The Chants should also look out for play-maker Nathan Lam, who has tallied three assists in his eight appearances for the Monarchs.
  • ODU has almost doubled Coastal's goal count at 12-7 but both teams are tied for second in the Sun Belt with four conference points each.
