Conway, S.C. – Kristin Williams scored eight of her 10 points in the final two minutes to help lift Coastal Carolina to a 63-61 come-from-behind win over Louisiana-Monroe in a Sun Belt conference women's basketball game Sunday afternoon at the HTC Center.
Coastal rallied from 10 points down in the final three minutes, using a 13-2 run to take a 60-58 lead when reserve guard
Dalanna Carter made a three-point shot to put Coastal back in front with a bit more than a minute remaining. Coastal had not led since it was 30-28 early in the third period. Coastal then made three of four free throws down the stretch to run its home record to 7-0 this season. Coastal is now 10-1 on the year and 1-0 in conference play.
Williams made a pair of three-pointers in the 13-2 run and then hit a couple free throws with 21 seconds left.
Savannah Brooks scored Coastal's final point on a free throw with seven second remaining, making the score 63-61. And Coastal's defense held ULM from getting off a shot in the last seconds.
Jaylen Ponder led Coastal with 15 points, including 12 of those in the first half. Brooks and
Alancia Ramsey added 11 points apiece, and Williams had 10. Coastal had been 4-of-30 from three-point range before making three in a row in its comeback rally. Williams made her first from the left wing and her next from the right corner. Carter made her long-range shot from the left corner, and it was just her second three-point attempt of the game. Carter finished with five points and two steals.
Kaitlyn Manuel led ULM with 17 points, but the Warhawks' loss leaves them at 4-8 overall and 0-1 in league play.
Neither team found it's groove in the first half, but it was a back-and-forth affair with six lead changes and the largest lead for either team being only six points. The Chants never led by more than three, but they had a 28-25 advantage at the half because of Brooks' three-pointer in the final seconds of the second quarter. Ponder led Coastal with 12 points at the break, while Manuel had 12 for the Warhawks.
But after going 0-6 from three-point range in the first half, ULM found the mark in the third quarter. The Warhawks made four baskets from beyond the arc and used two 7-0 runs to take a 46-38 lead through three quarters.
Another ULM bucket to open the final period gave the Warhawks a 10-point advantage, it's largest lead of the game. The Warhawks still lead by nine, at 56-47, when Coastal started its late comeback.
Coastal finished the game just 21-of-67 from the field (31 percent), and ULM wasn't much better at 22-of-62 (35 percent). Coastal was outrebounded by 48-41, but a committee effort proved to be just enough. Ponder led Coastal with nine rebounds, while Ramsey had six. Starting point guard
Jayden Marable and Brooks led CCU with three assists apiece.
Coastal now will have four road conference games to start 2025 before returning home for two conference games in mid-January. The Chanticleers will host Georgia State at 11 a.m. on Jan. 16, and then entertain James Madison at 1 p.m. Jan. 18.
