Men’s Soccer Opens Regular Season Versus College of Charleston

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team will open the regular season at the new CCU Soccer Complex  on August 22. The Chanticleers will take on the College of Charleston Cougars and kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET.

Chant Talk
  • This is the first of 11 home matches that will take place at the new CCU Soccer Complex.
  • The 2024 season will be head coach Shaun Docking's 27th year at the helm of Coastal Carolina's men's soccer team, where he posted a 329-176-55 record.
  • Docking has won 12 regular season championships (9 Big South, 3 Sun Belt), 11 conference tournament championships (7 Big South, 4 Sun Belt), and has made 15 NCAA appearances with the Men in Teal.
  • The Chants welcome assistant coach Juan Fajardo-Ortiz to the 2024 coaching staff. Fajardo-Ortiz was a graduate assistant coach with the Chanticleers from 2020-22 and helped guide the Chants to the 2020 Sun Belt Conference Tournament title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
  • CCU will look to improve on its 3-9-3 overall record in 2023.
  • In 2023, CCU had a 3-2-0 record in one-goal games and went undefeated when scoring first.
  • The Chants have a diverse roster with international players from Brazil, Canada, England, Germany, Honduras, Iceland, Israel, Japan, Luxembourg, Netherlands and the US Virgin Islands.         
History Against
  • CCU has a 17-8-4 record versus College of Charleston.
  • In their last 10 matchups, Coastal's record stands at 8-2-0
  • The Chants suffered a 2-0 defeat in their last meeting in September 2023.
  • Coastal will look to improve on its 8-3-3 home record versus the Cougars.
  • Over the course of their 29 encounters, the Chants have delivered a shutout win to CofC six times.
Scouting the Opponent
  • This is College of Charleston's first match of the season
  • In 2023, the Cougars went 6-6-5 overall and 2-4-2 in CAA play.
  • The Cougars return five of their 10 goal scorers from 2023, including All-CAA selection Leonardo D'Ambrosio, who led the team with eight assists and six goals.
  • Freshman Braden Gritz was named Gatorade South Carolina Boys Soccer Player of the Year.
  • The Cougars averaged 1.65 goals per game and posted a 0.401 shots-on-goal percentage in 2023.
