CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team fell to the South Carolina Gamecocks, 2-1, on Saturday evening at the CCU Soccer Complex.
With the loss, the Chants fall to 2-6-0, 1-1-0 Sun Belt while South Carolina improves to 6-2-2, 1-1-0 Sun Belt.
South Carolina got off to a quick start in the third minute when Ethan Ballek passed the ball to Harrison Myring, who sprinted down the left side of the pitch. Myring outpaced the CCU defense and cut the ball back to Alejandro Valazquex, who buried the ball into the top right corner to give USC a 1-0 lead.
The Chants looked to level the score in the eighth minute when
Loed Klaasen ripped the ball on goal, but it was met by the foot of Gamecock keeper Filip Versterre to hold the score at 1-0.
Coastal had another promising chance in the 28
th minute when
Robert Valdimarsson was 1-vs-1 with the USC keeper, but Versterre made a diving save to deny the Chants of the equalizer.
In the final 15 minutes of the first frame, Coastal outshot the Gamecocks 4-2 and forced one save, but couldn't break through to get on the scoreboard.
CCU continued to attack the USC backline in the opening 25 minutes of the second frame, firing six shots while holding the Gamecocks to just two attempts, but the USC defense held strong to keep the score at 1-0.
In the 84
th minute, South Carolina extended its lead when Ballek made a strong tackle to turn over the ball. The junior then smashed the ball into the top left corner to make the score 2-0.
The Chants narrowed the gap to 2-1 in the 87
th minute when
Evan Howard belted a penalty kick into the top left corner but it was not enough to steal the victory from the Gamecocks.
The Chanticleers will be back in action on Oct. 4 to take on the Georgia Southern Eagles at the CCU Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET.
