CONWAY, S.C. –
Brunelle Kouam didn't just arrive on the college tennis scene — she made an immediate impact, delivering a standout freshman season that signaled the beginning of what promises to be an exceptional collegiate career at Coastal Carolina.
The Washington, D.C., native led the Chanticleers with a 13-3 overall singles record and an impressive 6-2 mark in Sun Belt Conference play. From Feb. 3 to March 23, she put together an 11-match singles win streak. 11of her 13 wins came in straight sets, showcasing her consistency, composure, and competitive edge.
But Kouam's success wasn't limited to singles. In doubles, she was equally effective, posting a team-leading 12-6 overall record and a 5-3 mark in conference. Paired primarily with sophomore
Aida Mitrache, the duo went on an eight-match win streak from Feb. 3 to March 9 and clinched four key doubles points that helped set the tone in several matches.
For Kouam, the transition from junior tennis to the collegiate level came with its challenges — but it was a change she embraced wholeheartedly.
"The biggest change was learning how to be part of a team instead of just focusing on myself," Kouam said. "Playing for Coastal meant representing something bigger than me. It added pressure, but it also gave me motivation. Having coaches on court and balancing my game with team pride was new, but it made me stronger."
That team-first mindset helped Kouam thrive under the guidance of head coach
Catherine Hewitt and assistant coach
Kurt Caster, who both played key roles in her development.
"My biggest area of growth from day one to the end of the season was building my energy and confidence," she said. "When I first came to Coastal, I didn't have much confidence in this new environment, but with the help of Coach Catherine and Kurt, my belief in myself and in the team reached a whole new level."
Coach Hewitt echoed that sentiment, emphasizing not only Kouam's on-court success, but also the qualities that make her an indispensable part of the team culture.
"We are beyond excited to have Brunelle back for her sophomore campaign," Hewitt said. "Not only is she a spitfire on the tennis court, but she's also an energy giver, great communicator, great teammate, dependable, responsible, and so much fun."
From the first time Hewitt and her staff saw Kouam compete, they knew her potential was sky-high.
"At a national tournament, we saw how competitive and coachable she was. She's constantly evolving — adding more pace to her serve, sharpening her net game in doubles, and growing mentally. She finds ways to adapt and fight through tough moments," Hewitt said.
As she looks ahead to her sophomore season, Kouam is determined to build on the foundation she laid in her debut year.
"My goals are to keep another win streak going all season long and continue to build confidence — not just for myself, but for the team," she said. "I want us to be louder, have a winning season, and bring home the conference championship."
With her drive, talent, and team-first approach, Kouam is ready to take the next step in her journey — from standout freshman to proven team leader.
