Volleyball Looks To Return To Winning Ways Versus App State

CONWAY, S.C. - Coastal Carolina will look to get back in the win column on Friday night after dropping its first Sun Belt match of the season a week ago, following a 6-0 start, as it hosts App State in the first of two matches this weekend at the HTC Center. The Mountaineers are 4-4 in conference play after losing a pair of matches to Georgia Southern last weekend. Fans are encouraged to wear pink on Saturday as the Chants' host their annual "Dig Pink" match in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

SERIES VS. APP STATE | HISTORY 
Coastal leads the all-time series against App State 20-7, including a 16-4 record against the Mountaineers in Sun Belt Conference play. The Chants won 13 straight matches in the series from 2019 to 2023 before App State swept CCU in Boone last season to end Coastal's streak. The teams played six times between 1988 and 1997 but didn't meet again until Coastal joined the Sun Belt in 2016.

QUICK GLANCE: APP STATE
• App State enters this weekend's matches against Coastal Carolina with an overall record of 13-6 and a 4-4 mark in Sun Belt play. The Mountaineers are coming off back-to-back losses at Georgia Southern last weekend.
• App is 4-4 on the road this season, including true road wins over College of Charleston and Virginia.
• Former Coastal Carolina assistant coach Chad Sutton leads the Mountaineers' program. Sutton was an assistant at CCU during the 2022 season as was current App State assistant coach and director of volleyball operations Valerie Nichol Sutton.
• The Mountaineers rank sixth in the Sun Belt with a .229 hitting percentage and seventh in opponent hitting percentage (.210). They have compiled the second-most assists (938), kills (1,034), and attacks (2,783) in the conference this season.
• Senior Maya Winterhoff leads the Sun Belt Conference with a .404 hitting percentage (228-46-450) and ranks fourth in blocks per set (1.25) and second in total blocks (101).
• Senior Addison Heidemann leads the Mountaineers with 7.75 assists per set, the fourth-highest average in the Sun Belt.
• Defensive specialist MeMe Davis ranks eighth in the conference with 3.94 digs per set, tops on the team.
• Senior Ali Morris ranks second on the team in both kills per set (2.54) and digs per set (2.23) and leads the Mountaineers with 23 total aces.

LAST TIME OUT
• The Coastal Carolina volleyball team was swept by SBC East co-leader James Madison last weekend, falling 3-1 (20-25, 25-22, 22-25, 22-25) and 3-0 (22-25, 16-25, 19-25).
•The Chants hit .221 (94-37-258) as a team, while the Dukes hit .309 (103-27-246) and totaled 17 blocks compared to 13 by Coastal.
• Junior Jalyn Stout recorded her ninth triple-double of the season in Friday's series-opening match with 17 kills, 24 assists, and 16 digs. It was the 43rd of her career, most in NCAA history. Ava Wallis also posted her 10th double-double of the season in the match with 25 assists and 12 digs.
• Coastal recorded 61 kills and 57 assists in the series opener — its most in both categories in any match this season.

COASTAL DOMINANT AT HOME VS. SBC EAST: Despite losing its first match against a Sun Belt East Division opponent since 2021 last weekend, the Chanticleers are 15-5 against their division foes under head coach Steve Loeswick. The Chants have won six in a row over the Mountaineers at the HTC Center and own an 8-1 overall record against their rival at the facility.

STOUT REACHES 1,000 KILLS: Junior Jalyn Stout became the 13th player in school history to reach 1,000 career kills last Friday night against James Madison. She enters the weekend with 1,015 total kills. She has 248 so far this season after collecting 402 as a sophomore and 365 as a freshman.

TOP 10 BLOCKERS & HITTERS: CCU juniors Emily Fowler and Anna Rita both rank among the Sun Belt leaders in blocks. Rita leads the league with 1.54 blocks per set (eighth nationally), while Fowler is 10th at 1.03. Fowler ranks third in the league with a .357 hitting percentage, with Rita ranking seventh at .337.

BLOCK PARTY: Coastal Carolina ranks among the top 20 nationally in total blocks (10th) and blocks per set (16th), leading the Sun Belt in both categories. The Chants have accumulated 199 total blocks while averaging 2.76 blocks per set. CCU led the Sun Belt in blocks per set in 2019 (2.21) and 2021 (2.53).

DIGGIN' IT: Senior Bailee Earnhardt has recorded 242 digs — the most of her career — in 35 fewer sets than her previous mark. She needed 107 sets to collect 234 digs in 2023 and has needed just 72 to surpass that total this year.
