Jones Scores 23 To Lead Coastal Past ODU

NORFOLK, Va.Rasheed Jones tied his career high with 23 points, and Coastal Carolina snapped a three-game losing streak to Old Dominion posting a 76-74 win Saturday afternoon at Chartway Arena.

Jones went 7-of-13 from the field, made both of his 3-point attempts and was a perfect 7-of-7 at the line for the Chanticleers (7-6, 1-1 Sun Belt). He also hit two free throws with three seconds left to push the lead to five after Old Dominion (4-9, 1-1) had closed within three.

Joshua Beadle added 19 points and four assists for Coastal Carolina, which overcame a 3-of-17 performance from the 3-point line by living at the foul line. The Chanticleers finished 21-of-24 at the charity stripe.

Nadjrick Peat scored nine points and grabbed nine rebounds while surpassing 200 career blocked shots. Peat finished with three blocks as Coastal totaled five.

Former Chanticleer Jordan Battle scored 23 points for Old Dominion, hitting 4-of-5 from 3-point range and 7-of-8 free throws. Ketron Shaw added 20 points, and Caelum Swanton-Rodger had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Coastal led 34-29 at halftime after closing the first half with Beadle's second-chance floater in the final seconds. ODU surged early in the second half and pulled even at 40 on Jared Turner's putback at the 15:12 mark, part of a back-and-forth stretch that featured eight lead changes and six ties.

Jones delivered timely answers as the Chants heated up from the perimeter, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers in a 59-second span to help Coastal regain momentum. ODU stayed within striking distance and made it a one-possession game repeatedly in the final two minutes.

Peat hit two free throws with nine seconds left to make it 74-68, but Battle drilled a 3-pointer with four seconds remaining to cut the deficit to three. Jones was fouled on the ensuing inbound play and made both free throws before Battle hit a 3 at the buzzer to set the final margin.

Despite being out-rebounded 37-34, Coastal capitalized on 13 Old Dominion turnovers and scored 18 points off them, helping the Chanticleers end a two-game skid.

Coastal returns to action on Monday, Dec. 22, in Philadelphia against St. Joe's. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
