MADISON, Miss. – Coastal Carolina senior
Max Bengtsson captured individual medalist honors, while the Chanticleers finished runner-up at the 2026 Sun Belt Conference Men's Golf Championship on Thursday at Annandale Golf Club.
Coastal Carolina earned the No. 1 seed for match play after finishing atop the 54-hole stroke play leaderboard at 14-under par, three shots clear of No. 2 seed Arkansas State. The Chanticleers carded rounds of 282, 285 and 283 to lead the field entering match play.
Bengtsson became the second Sun Belt individual champion in program history after finishing the tournament at 11-under par. He posted rounds of 70, 66 and 69 to pace the 70-player field and was the only golfer to finish double-digits under par. Bengtsson entered the final round tied for the lead before using a 3-under 69 on Thursday to secure medalist honors.
Coastal Carolina opened match play with a 4-1 semifinal victory over South Alabama. The Chanticleers received wins from
Lucas Arntsen (3&2),
Jack Lee (5&4),
Drew Sykes (6&5) and Bengtsson (4UP).
In the championship match, Coastal Carolina fell 4-1 to Arkansas State.
Harrison James claimed the Chanticleers' lone point with a 4&2 victory. Three other matches were decided by just one hole.
Sykes finished second individually at 8-under par, giving Coastal Carolina the top two spots on the player leaderboard.
Jack Lee tied for 26th at 4-over, Lucas Arnsten tied for 31st at 5-over and
Owen Kim finished 47th at 10-over.
Coastal Carolina will now await its postseason fate, which will be revealed during the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships Selection Show on May 6 on Golf Channel.
