Volleyball Rallies Past Queens In Five Sets

CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Queens 3-2 and earn its first victory of the season Sunday afternoon inside the HTC Center.

The Chanticleers (1-1) won the opening set 25-10 before the Royals (0-2) took the next two by identical 25-23 scores. Coastal extended the match with a 25-23 victory in the fourth and captured the deciding set 15-11.

Anzley Rinard led all players with 19 kills and added nine digs, while Natalie Hughes finished with 17 kills and six blocks. Hatteras Welker hit .500 with 15 kills and six blocks.

Jonna Spohn paced the Chants with a match-high 24 digs. Kaylee Musick handed out 28 assists, while Isabella Loeswick added 20. Freshman Abby Bucey recorded five of Coastal's 11 service aces.

Coastal hit .700 with 15 kills and only one attack error in the opening set. The Chants broke a 4-all tie with a 7-0 run behind the serving of Bucey, who recorded three aces during the stretch. Coastal scored 14 of the final 17 points to close out the set.

The Chants led 20-15 in the second set, but Queens used a 6-1 run to even the score at 21. After the teams traded the next four points, the Royals scored the final two to tie the match.

Queens took control of the third set with a 5-0 run that turned a 17-all tie into a 22-17 advantage. Coastal fought off two set points before the Royals secured another 25-23 victory and a 2-1 lead in the match.

The Chants built a 14-6 advantage in the fourth set before Queens pulled within one at 22-21. Coastal held off the rally as Hughes delivered kills on the final two points to force a deciding set.

Queens scored the first three points of the fifth set before Coastal answered and took an 8-6 lead. The teams were tied at 10 when the Chants used a 4-0 run, highlighted by kills from Rinard, Amarah Johnson and Hughes and a service ace by Rinard, to reach match point. Queens scored once more before Coastal closed out the victory.

Coastal finished with a .237 hitting percentage and held Queens to .134. The Chants also recorded a 13-8 advantage in blocks.

Elizabeth Layson led Queens with 13 kills, while Emma Norris added 10.

Coastal returns to action Friday, Sept. 4, at the Dolphins Volleyball Classic in Jacksonville, Fla. The Chants will face UConn at 11 a.m. and host JU at 7 p.m.
