Volleyball Splits A Pair Of Matches At Dolphin Classic

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Coastal Carolina split a pair of matches Friday at the Dolphin Volleyball Classic, falling to UConn in five sets before defeating host Jacksonville in four at Swisher Gymnasium.
The Chanticleers (2-2) dropped a 3-2 (25-20, 22-25, 19-25, 25-23, 15-17) decision to UConn before rebounding for a 3-1 (25-16, 30-28, 20-25, 25-23) win over Jacksonville.
Anzley Rinard led Coastal with 33 kills on the day, including a season-high 19 against UConn. Hatteras Welker added 19 kills, eight blocks and four service aces while hitting .412.
UConn 3, Coastal Carolina 2
Coastal hit .273 and committed just 17 attack errors but could not hold an 8-3 lead in the fifth set.
Rinard finished with 19 kills, while Isabele Filardo added 15 kills and seven digs. Natalie Hughes recorded 11 kills with one error on 28 attempts for a .357 hitting percentage.
The Chants won the opening set 25-20 before UConn took the next two to move ahead 2-1. Coastal trailed 22-19 in the fourth set but scored six of the final seven points to force a fifth.
Coastal led 15-14 in the deciding set, but UConn answered with three consecutive kills to win the match.
Kaylee Musick posted a double-double with 33 assists and 10 digs while adding three aces. Jonna Spohn led the Chants with 17 digs.
Coastal Carolina 3, Jacksonville 1
Rinard recorded 14 kills and Welker added 12 as Coastal closed the day with a four-set victory over Jacksonville.
Welker committed just two errors on 17 attempts to hit .588. She also finished with four blocks and three service aces.
The Chants used a six-point run to build a 17-8 lead on the way to a 25-16 win in the opening set. Coastal then outlasted Jacksonville 30-28 in the second, with Welker delivering the final kill.
Jacksonville avoided the sweep by scoring nine consecutive points in the third set, turning a 13-8 deficit into a 17-13 lead.
The Dolphins held an 18-17 advantage in the fourth before the Chants scored three straight points to regain the lead. Jacksonville pulled even at 21, but Coastal scored four of the final six points to secure the victory.
Coastal finished with 11 blocks and 11 service aces. Hughes recorded a match-high seven blocks, Musick handed out 33 assists and Spohn collected 14 digs. Abby Bucey added a match-high four aces.
Coastal concludes play at the Dolphin Volleyball Classic against Florida A&M at 5 p.m. Saturday.
