KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Coastal Carolina had its three-match winning streak snapped with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-17) loss to No. 17 Tennessee on Saturday afternoon at Food City Center.
The Chanticleers fell to 4-3 on the season, while Tennessee improved to 6-1.
Viara Parapunova led Coastal with seven kills and eight digs, while Anna Rita and Hatteras Welker recorded six kills apiece. Rita finished with a team-high five blocks, and Welker added four blocks and one service ace.
Coastal built an early 8-5 advantage in the opening set before Tennessee tied the score at 10-10. The two teams were even at 13-13 before the Lady Vols used a 6-1 run to take a 19-14 lead.
The Chants pulled within two at 19-17 following three consecutive points, but Tennessee answered by scoring six of the final eight points to take the set 25-19.
Coastal scored four straight points to take a 6-2 lead in the second set and remained in front until Tennessee tied the score at 14-14. The Lady Vols used a 4-0 run to break a 15-15 tie and take control of the set before earning another 25-19 victory.
Tennessee jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the third set and extended the advantage to 16-7. Coastal scored three consecutive points while facing match point before the Lady Vols closed out the match with a 25-17 win.
Bella Loeswick handed out 12 assists and collected six digs, while Kaylee Musick finished with 11 assists and four digs. Jonna Spohn matched Parapunova with a team-high eight digs.
Coastal finished with a 9-7 advantage in total blocks. Natalie Hughes and Isabele Filardo contributed three blocks each, while Parapunova added two.
Former Chanticleer Jalyn Stout led Tennessee with 17 kills and hit .400. The Lady Vols recorded 51 kills and finished with a .288 hitting percentage.
Coastal returns home to host the Chanticleer Classic next weekend, Sept. 18-20. The Chanticleers will face Indiana on Friday and NC State on Sunday.
