Biography
Melissa, a junior outside hitter and native of Glendale, Arizona, transferred to Coastal Carolina after two seasons at Scottsdale (Arizona) Community College. With six freshmen on the 1998 roster and not a lot of experience returning, Head Coach Tammi McCaudy-Lee needed a junior college player who could step in and make a significant contribution right away. Melissa gave her exactly what the Lady Chants' program needed as she was second on the team with 363 kills and 351 digs in 122 games. These numbers rank her in elite company on Coastal Carolina all-time single season record list as she is currently fifth in kills, sixth in kills per game (2.98), third in total attacks (1,041) and sixth in digs. Gabriel posted a carer-high 22 kills against Campbell University. In the Big South Tournament semifinal win over Radford University, she had a career-high 21 digs and added 16 kills.
