Virginia Commonwealth Downs Men's Soccer 2-0 RICHMOND, VA — Virginia Commonwealth University posted a pair of second-half goals to defeat Coastal Carolina University, 2-0, tonight at Sports Backers Stadium.
Rams sophomore forward Matthew Delicate (Wales, U.K.) scored the game¹s first goal at the 53:19 mark. Delicate scored the game-winner his third of the season after CCU goalkeeper Eric Sullivan could not hold the ball in the box. The ball bounced free in front of the net and Delicate put it away.
That goal led to several VCU scoring chances over the next 20 minutes. Sophomore Matt Pauls (Virginia Beach, Va.) tallied the Rams second goal at the 74:36 mark, off an assist from senior Roman Otten (Bremen, Germany). Pauls took Otten¹s cross near the top of the box and struck from 15 yards out.
VCU senior goalkeeper Adam Mead (Mechanicsville, Va.) posted his second straight shutout and third of the season, stopping three Chanticleer shots.
Virginia Commonwealth improves to 3-1-1 on the season, while Coastal Carolina falls to 1-4. The Rams next match is this Saturday (Sept. 22), at the University of Richmond. Kickoff is set for 7:30 pm.
